Review Case ReportsTraumatic dislocation of the hip in young children.
Traumatic dislocation of the hip joint is an uncommon injury in children. The present report on this traumatic emergency is based on the authors' own observations of three cases and a review of the literature. ⋯ The crucial therapeutic intervention to avoid this serious complication seems to be immediate, usually closed, reduction under general anaesthesia. A management protocol is presented.

The blood levels of the active metabolites of vitamin D3 25-hydroxycholecalciferol [25(OH)D3]. 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol [1,25(OH)2D3], and 24,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol [24,25(OH)2D3] were determined in 27 patients suffering from arthrosis of the knee, including 4 patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. The blood level of 24,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol was found to be significantly lower in patients with gonarthrosis than in patients with coxarthrosis. With the exclusion of the diabetic patients, the mean value for this metabolite was lower than in the coxarthrosis group, but the difference was not significant statistically.

ReviewBlood loss in total hip replacement. A retrospective study.
Two hundred and twelve total hip replacements performed in one clinic over 1 year were reviewed. The mean operative time was 89 min and mean total blood loss 1090 ml. Homologous blood was administered to 74% of the patients. ⋯ Despite a mean of only 12 total hip replacements per surgeon, both operative time and blood loss were small compared to what was found in other studies. The use of a posterior approach is believed to contribute to a shorter operative time as well as to moderate blood loss. Intraoperative blood loss was less under epidural than under general anaesthesia, but in contrast to others we found higher postoperative blood loss after epidural anaesthesia.

ReviewLocking screw-plate fixation of cervical spine fractures with and without ancillary posterior plating.
Forty consecutive patients with 19 fractures and 21 fracture-dislocations in the lower cervical spine were treated prospectively with open reduction and interbody fusion, using the AO titanium locking screw-plate system. There were 30 men and 10 women with a mean age of 36 years (range 16-90 years). Eight were admitted tetraplegic, 12 tetraparetic, and 6 had nerve root injuries. ⋯ Six screws transgressed facet joints below the fusion. Ten posterior fusions extended to adjacent mobile segments by exuberant bony overgrowth. Ancillary posterior plating significantly reduced the range of neck mobility and also caused significantly more pain than anterior plate fixation alone.

ReviewTumors and tumor-like lesions arising in tendons. A clinicopathological study of 75 cases.
Eight cases of malignant tumors, 38 cases of benign tumors, 15 cases of metastatic tumors, and 14 cases of tumor-like lesions arising in tendons seen over a period of 22 years (1967-1988) are surveyed. Benign tumors of tendon occur relatively frequently - in 38 (1.7%) of 2143 tendon biopsies - but malignant tumors (0.37%) and metastases (0.70%) are extremely rare. Malignant tumors occurred most frequently in lower limb tendons, while benign tumors were most often found in the tendons of the hand.
