After the low friction arthroplasty by John Charnley was no longer confined to specialized hospitals but commonplace in the general orthopedic practice, the issue remained how to most optimally reach the hip. The names of the authors of these approaches remain in a lot of cases connected to the approach. By evaluating the original articles in which the approaches are described we ascertain the original description and technique. ⋯ The eponymous approaches are shown and described after the short biography on each individual. This study shows that without the work of our colleagues we cannot proceed in our profession. An understanding and knowledge of the people who dedicated themselves to developing the orthopedic surgery to the high standard it has today is the least honour we should give them.

Functional anatomy of the lateral collateral ligament of the elbow.
The aim of this study was to analyze the functional anatomy of the lateral collateral ligament complex (LCLC) and the surrounding forearm extensors. ⋯ The LUCL represents the posterior branch of the RCL rather than a distinct ligament. It is non-isometric and lengthens during elbow flexion. The RCL was found to be of vital importance for neutralization of posterolateral rotatory forces. Pronation of the forearm actively stabilizes the elbow joint as the supinator, anconeus and biceps muscle work in unison to increase posterolateral rotatory stability.

Multicenter Study Observational StudyCartilage repair surgery for full-thickness defects of the knee in Germany: indications and epidemiological data from the German Cartilage Registry (KnorpelRegister DGOU).
Treatment of cartilage defects of the knee remains an important issue with high relevance. In October 2013 the German Cartilage Registry (KnorpelRegister DGOU) was initiated in order to study indications, epidemiology and (clinical) outcome of different cartilage repair techniques. The present evaluation of the registry baseline data was initiated to report common practices of cartilage repair surgery in Germany. ⋯ The present analysis of data from the German Cartilage Registry shows that the vast majority of cartilage repair procedures were applied in degenerative, non-traumatic cartilage defects. Experts in Germany seem to follow the national and international guidelines in terms that bone marrow stimulation is applied in smaller cartilage defects while cell-based therapies are used for the treatment of larger cartilage defects. In patellar cartilage defects a trend towards the use of cell-based therapies has been observed.

Comparative Study Clinical TrialProcedural outcomes of double vs. single fluoroscopy for fixing intertrochanteric femur fractures.
This study compares reducing radiation and operation time between single and double C-arm fluoroscopy in the treatment of intertrochanteric femur fractures with intramedullary nails. ⋯ The double fluoroscopy technique can significantly reduce surgical and radiation exposure times during surgery.

Clinical TrialRisk comparison of bleeding and ischemic perioperative complications after acute and elective orthopedic surgery in patients with cardiovascular disease.
The study objective was to ascertain the incidence of bleeding and ischemic complications related to acute and planned orthopedic surgery in patients with known cardiovascular diseases. ⋯ The study noted a significantly higher incidence of bleeding complications in elective orthopedic surgery when compared with acute surgery. Conversely, the incidence of ischemic complications was significantly higher in patients having acute orthopedic surgery when compared with those operated on electively.
