Although global and regional brain volume has been established as a relevant measure to define and predict multiple sclerosis (MS) severity, characterization of specific trends by race/ethnicity is currently lacking. We aim to (1) characterize racial disparities in disability-specific patterns of brain MRI volumetric measures between Hispanic and Caucasian individuals with MS and (2) explore the relevance of these measures as predictors of clinical disability progression. ⋯ The confounding impact of race on quantitative brain volume measures may affect the interpretation of outcome measures in MS clinical trials.

Novel Ultrafast Spiral Head MR Angiography Compared to Standard MR and CT Angiography.
Intracranial vessel imaging by time-of-flight MR angiography (TOF-MRA) is one of the most frequently performed investigations in clinical neuroradiology. Particularly in the acute setting, fast imaging is needed for diagnostics, with a sequence ideally depicting even small vessels. The purpose of this study was to compare image and diagnostic quality of a novel ultrashort TOF-MRA sequence accelerated by spiral imaging (TOF-Spiral-short) to a standard TOF-MRA sequence accelerated by compressed sensing (TOF-CS) and to CT angiography (CTA). ⋯ Accelerating TOF-MRA of brain-feeding arteries by a novel ultrashort spiral imaging sequence shows adequate image quality and sufficient diagnostic performance. Thus, TOF-Spiral-short holds potential for fast and reliable diagnostics of vessel pathologies, particularly in the acute setting.

Myotonic Dystrophy Type I (DM1) is a neurodegenerative, genetic, and multisystemic disorder with a large variety of symptoms due to a CTG trinucleotide expansion located on Dystrophia Myotonica Protein Kinase (DMPK) gene. Previous reports have shown cognitive deterioration in these patients. Given that white matter (WM) degradation has also been reported in DM1 patients, here we explored if alterations in the cognitive profile of DM1 patients could be related to the deterioration of WM. ⋯ Our results suggest that despite the pervasive WM integrity loss in DM1 disorder, specific memory impairments can be associated to discreet areas of WM deterioration in these patients.

Mycobacterium leprae complex affects peripheral nerves, causing nerve enlargement. This proof-of-concept pilot study was conducted to determine if a small hand-held ultrasound device can accurately identify nerve involvement in individuals with leprosy. ⋯ A hand-held ultrasound device can readily identify nerve enlargement in individuals with leprosy. This type of device may assist in the diagnosis of leprosy in areas with limited healthcare resources because of the portability and low-cost nature of such devices.

Prediction of Meningioma WHO Grade Using PET Findings: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
World Health Organization (WHO) grading of meningiomas reflects recurrence rate and prognosis. Positron emission tomography (PET) investigates metabolic activity, allowing for distinction between low- and high-grade tumors. As preoperative suspicion for malignant meningioma will influence surgical strategy in terms of timing, extent of resection, and risks taken to achieve a total resection, we systematically reviewed the literature on PET-imaging in meningiomas and relate these findings to histopathological analysis. ⋯ We found that SUV and T/N ratio in 18F-FDG PET may be useful to noninvasively differentiate benign from malignant meningiomas. T/N ratio seems to have a high specificity for the detection of high-grade meningiomas. Other PET tracers were studied too infrequently to draw definitive conclusions. Before treatment strategies can be adapted based on 18F-FDG PET, prospective studies in larger cohorts are warranted to validate the optimal T/N ratio cutoff point.
