A number of functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies rely on application of anesthetic agents during scanning that can modulate and complicate interpretation of the measured hemodynamic blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) response. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of general anesthesia on two main components of BOLD signal including neuronal activity and vascular response. ⋯ This experiment for the first human study showed that anesthesia may play an important role in dissociation between neuronal and vascular responses contributed to hemodynamic BOLD signal using BH fMRI imaging that may assist the implication of general anesthesia and interpretation of outcomes in clinical setting.

Pituitary macroadenomas and meningiomas are common neoplasms arising within the cavernous sinus. Imaging characteristics on MRI can often distinguish these tumors from one another; however, some cases may be more difficult to differentiate. This study compares patterns of cavernous segment internal carotid artery (CS-ICA) stenosis between the two tumor types to establish a novel radiographic method of differentiation. ⋯ Differentiating pituitary adenomas and intracavernous meningioma tumors can have important implications on surgical approach and outcome. Our study found that stenosis of the CS-ICA greater than 15% is highly specific to meningiomas and can serve as a radiologic sign to distinguish between these two tumors.

Previous studies have proposed multiple parallel channels for waste clearance from the brain, though many gaps remain in our understanding of these systems. In this study, we examined periarterial fluid drainage around intracranial and extracranial segments of the internal carotid arteries (ICAs) from the brain into the cervical lymph nodes using a noninvasive and clinical-based method. ⋯ We describe the in vivo high-resolution imaging characteristics of periarterial fluid drainage along the vessel walls of ICAs. This represents a potentially major channel for brain waste clearance. We also report interesting sex- and age-based trends in these structures within our cohort.

Brain death is defined as the irreversible cessation of brain function with a known etiology. This study aims to establish the value of duplex echoencephalography (DEG) in children fulfilling clinical brain death diagnostic criteria. ⋯ In children, DEG following a strict protocol can be used to confirm diagnosis of brain death in the appropriate clinical setting.
