Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyDistraction with a hand-held video game reduces pediatric preoperative anxiety.
Video games have received widespread application in health care for distraction and behavior modification therapy. Studies on the effect of cognitive distraction during the preoperative period are lacking. We evaluated the efficacy of an interactive distraction, a hand-held video game (VG) in reducing preoperative anxiety in children. ⋯ A hand-held VG can be offered to most children as a low cost, easy to implement, portable, and effective method to reduce anxiety in the preoperative area and during induction of anesthesia. Distraction in a pleasurable and familiar activity provides anxiety relief, probably through cognitive and motor absorption.

Randomized Controlled TrialThe effect of capsicum plaster in pain after inguinal hernia repair in children.
Capsicum plaster at a classical Chinese acupoint is an alternative to acupuncture, which has been used as a supplemental therapy to opioid analgesics for pain control during the postoperative period. We investigated the postoperative analgesic efficacy of capsicum plaster at Zusanli (ST-36) points after pediatric hernia repair. ⋯ Placement of capsicum plaster at the Zusanli points reduces pain and postoperative opioid consumption in children undergoing inguinal hernia repair, but not in the first six postoperative hours.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyDoes tramadol wound infiltration offer an advantage over bupivacaine for postoperative analgesia in children following herniotomy?
It has been demonstrated that tramadol is an effective analgesic. We aimed to compare postoperative analgesic effects of wound infiltration with tramadol (T) or bupivacaine (B) and intramuscular tramadol (I) after herniotomy in children. ⋯ Wound infiltration with tramadol may be a good choice for postoperative analgesia in children having inguinal herniotomy.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyAnesthesia for pediatric gastroscopy: a study comparing the ProSeal laryngeal mask airway with nasal cannulae.
We tested the hypothesis that pediatric gastroscopy is more successful using the ProSeal laryngeal mask airway with the drain tube as a conduit to the stomach (ProSeal LMA group) than using nasal cannulae with conventional oral access to the stomach (NC group). ⋯ We conclude that pediatric gastroscopy is quicker and has fewer airway complications when performed through the ProSeal LMA than using nasal cannulae and a conventional approach by experienced users.
