Observational StudyDifferent predictivity of fluid responsiveness by pulse pressure variation in children after surgical repair of ventricular septal defect or tetralogy of Fallot.
Pulse pressure variation derived from the varied pulse contour method is based on heart-lung interaction during mechanical ventilation. It has been shown that pulse pressure variation is predictive of fluid responsiveness in children undergoing surgical repair of ventricular septal defect. Right ventricle compliance and pulmonary vascular capacitance in children with tetralogy of Fallot are underdeveloped as compared to those in ventricular septal defect. We hypothesized that the difference in the right ventricle-pulmonary circulation in the two groups of children would affect the heart-lung interaction and therefore pulse pressure variation predictivity of fluid responsiveness following cardiac surgery. ⋯ Pulse pressure variation is predictive of fluid responsiveness in ventricular septal defect and tetralogy of Fallot patients following cardiac surgery.

Anatomic variations of neck vessels and the course of pediatric internal jugular veins.
Landmark-guided internal jugular vein cannulation is difficult for pediatric patients but useful, especially when ultrasound equipment is unavailable. Therefore, it is important to define the adjacent anatomic characteristics of the pediatric internal jugular vein. ⋯ The common carotid artery and internal jugular vein are farther apart as one moves down the neck, whereas the vertebral artery and internal jugular vein are getting together. Additionally, the diameter of the internal jugular vein increased.

Biography Historical ArticleOutstanding contribution to pediatric anesthesiology: An interview with Dr. Robert H. Friesen.
Dr. Robert H. Friesen, (1946-) Professor of Anesthesiology, Children's Hospital Colorado, University of Colorado, Anschutz Medical Campus, has played a pivotal and pioneering role in the development of pediatric and congenital cardiac anesthesiology. ⋯ As a model clinician-scientist, educator, and administrator, he changed the practice of pediatric anesthesia and shaped the careers of hundreds of physicians-in-training, imbuing them with his core values of honesty, integrity, and responsibility. Based on a series of interviews with Dr. Friesen, this article reviews a career that advanced pediatric and congenital cardiac anesthesia during the formative years of the specialties.

Lower airway dimensions in pediatric patients-A computed tomography study.
The aim of this study was to obtain lower airway dimensions in children by means of computed tomography (CT). ⋯ This comprehensive anatomical database of lower airway dimensions demonstrates that tracheal and bronchial diameters correlate better to age, and that tracheal and bronchial length correlate better to body length. All measured airway parameters correlated poorly to body weight.
