Meta AnalysisDiagnostic accuracy of stroke volume variation for predicting fluid responsiveness in children undergoing cardiac surgery: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
Stroke volume variation appears to be reliable for predicting fluid responsiveness in adults, and its predictive value in pediatric patients has been recently reported. However, its predictive value in children undergoing cardiac surgery is unclear. ⋯ There was some heterogeneity due to thresholds in the included studies. An evaluation of stroke volume variation may represent a reliable predictor of fluid responsiveness in children undergoing cardiac surgery. After operative cardiac output optimization, the possible impact of goal-directed fluid treatment depending on stroke volume variation on the perioperative outcome in the children population should subsequently be assessed.

Observational StudyThe performance of the heart rate variability derived Newborn Infant Parasympathetic Evaluation Index as a measure of early postoperative pain and discomfort in infants - a prospective observational study.
The heart rate variability-derived Newborn Infant Parasympathetic Evaluation (NIPE™) Index is a continuous noninvasive tool for the assessment of pain and discomfort in infants. Little is known about its performance in the early postoperative setting, where assessment of pain/discomfort is usually based on discontinuous observational scoring systems or personal experience of medical staff. ⋯ The NIPE detected pain and discomfort in infants after general anesthesia with reasonable areas under the ROC curve (±0.8), whereas it was not predictive of clinically detectable pain or discomfort.

Randomized Controlled TrialThe effect of dexmedetomidine premedication on postoperative systemic inflammatory response in children undergoing hernia repair surgery: A randomized controlled trial.
Surgery results in systemic inflammation, which can affect the central nervous system, leading to changes in mood, emotion, and behavior. Our previous study has shown that compared to midazolam, dexmedetomidine premedication effectively decreased children's postoperative anxiety. ⋯ A single preoperative intravenous dexmedetomidine dose in children undergoing same-day surgery reduces postoperative systemic inflammation.

Randomized Controlled TrialEffects of tip-manipulated stylet angle on intubation using the GlideScope® videolaryngoscope in children: a prospective randomized controlled trial.
An optimal endotracheal tube curve can be a key factor in successful intubation using the GlideScope videolaryngoscope. ⋯ Having additional angle of the endotracheal tube tip to the left could be a useful technique to facilitate directing and advancing endotracheal tube into the vocal cords.

Incidence of post-induction hypoxemia in children and the effect of induction gas composition.
Pediatric preoxygenation and inhalation induction of anesthesia can include a mixture of gases. In children, the clinical impact on oxygenation while using other gases with oxygen during an inhalation induction is unknown. ⋯ The risk of hypoxemia following an inhalation induction of anesthesia in children is minimized when the inspired concentration of oxygen is greater than 60%.
