Observational StudyPostoperative outcome of neonatal emergency surgeries in a tertiary care institute-A prospective observational study.
Neonatal surgical mortality continues to be high in developing countries. A better understanding of perioperative events and optimization of causative factors can help in achieving a favorable outcome. The present study was designed to evaluate the perioperative course of surgical neonates and find out potential factors contributing to postoperative mortality. ⋯ Present study identified preterm birth, preoperative oxygen therapy, postoperative positive pressure ventilation, requirement of inotropes, and postoperative leukopenia as independent predictors of 6-week mortality. The possibility of early switch to noninvasive positive pressure ventilation was associated with a reduction in neonatal mortality.

Randomized Controlled TrialApplication of behavioral economic strategies to enhance recruitment into a pediatric randomized clinical trial for postoperative pain relief: A randomized clinical trial.
A major challenge in conducting clinical trials is recruitment. Trial under-enrollment leads to underpowered studies. Behavioral economics offers strategies that may enhance trial recruitment. This study assessed the impact of behavioral economic strategies versus a standard biological approach to recruit children into a randomized clinical trial assessing a biofeedback-based virtual reality intervention for postoperative pain management. We hypothesized the behavioral economics-informed approach would increase enrollment into the future trial, intention to adhere to therapy, acceptability of the intervention, and perceived efficacy while decreasing perception of treatment burden and risk. ⋯ Either approach would be sufficient for patient recruitment for this type of clinical trial since the overall intention to enroll rate was 77%.

Pediatric Cardiac Anesthesia Training and Staffing in the National Health Service.
Considerable importance is attached to the process of training, appointing and retaining highly specialized pediatric anesthetists, such as those with a congenital heart disease practice. ⋯ There has been both an expansion in the number of posts, as well as considerable turnover in consultant posts in the last 10 years. Training standards which support and guide individuals as they develop a practice in this highly specialized field should reflect different routes into the speciality and could be established with the support and advice of the Congenital Cardiac Anesthesia Network.

The role of WhatsApp™ in pediatric difficult airway management: A study from the PeDI Collaborative.
Management of the pediatric difficult airway can present unique clinical challenges. The Pediatric Difficult Intubation Collaborative (PeDI-C) is an international collaborative group engaging in quality improvement and research in children with difficult airways. The PeDI-C established a WhatsApp™ group to facilitate real-time discussions around the management of the difficult airway in pediatric patients. The goals of this study were to evaluate the patterns of use of the WhatsApp™ group, themes on messages posted on pediatric difficult airway management and to assess the perceived usefulness of the WhatsApp™ group by the PeDI-C members. ⋯ The PeDI-C WhatsApp™ group has facilitated timely knowledge exchange on pediatric difficult airway management across the world. Participants are satisfied with the role the Whatsapp™ group is playing.
