ReviewStatistics in Quality Improvement: Measurement and Statistical Process Control.
Data are used in healthcare quality improvement endeavors to measure and determine whether the changes made in the course of the work have made the desired impact. The methods used to analyze data in quality improvement differ slightly from those used in classical statistics. Run charts and statistical process control charts are the most common types of graphical representations used to visualize data collected for quality improvement. This review provides a basic introduction to measurement in quality improvement and explains the use of run charts and statistical process control charts with real-life examples.

Observance of preoperative clear fluid fasting in paediatric anaesthesia: oral and written information versus text message information. A before-and-after study.
Prolonged fasting before surgery is common in pediatrics. In the literature, it is responsible for hypotension, irritability and postoperative nausea and vomiting. Despite clear instructions given during the preanesthetic consultation, fasting rules are respected in only 30%-40% of cases. We aimed to evaluate the benefit of sending a text message the day before surgery to improve the parents' observance of fasting rules. ⋯ Sending of a reminder text message to the parents the day before the surgery resulted in a significant increase in observance of fasting rules in children undergoing scheduled surgery.

Study to evaluate the optimal dose of remifentanil required to ensure apnea during magnetic resonance imaging of the heart under general anesthesia.
Magnetic resonance (MRI) scanning of the heart is an established part of the investigation of cardiovascular conditions in children. In young children, sedation is likely to be needed, and multiple controlled periods of apnea are often required to allow image acquisition. Suppression of spontaneous ventilation is possible with remifentanil; however, the dose required is uncertain. ⋯ The ED80 for this indication was 0.184 µg/kg/min (95% CI 0.178-0.190). This is different from optimal dosing identified for other indications and dosing of remifentanil should be specific to the clinical context in which it is used.

Tracheal Intubation related adverse Events in Pediatrics Anesthesia in Ethiopia.
Tracheal intubation is a common intervention for many pediatric surgical patients. Even though it can be lifesaving, it carries a risk of morbidity and even mortality. Evidence is lacking regarding the adverse events related to pediatric intubation in Ethiopia. This study is aimed to assess the scale of tracheal intubation-related adverse events with its associated factors in pediatrics surgical patients at Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. ⋯ The incidence of tracheal intubation-related adverse events in pediatric surgical patients is high. Anesthesia professionals should be vigilant and have a preplanned strategy to avoid intubation-related adverse events, especially in high-risk patients. The use of difficult airway algorithms, oxygen saturation monitoring, and training in simulation room are very important strategies to help reduce patient harm.
