To evaluate variability in the detection and prevention of acute kidney injury (AKI) in the intensive care unit (ICU), and application of the international recommendations in this field (Acute Dialysis Quality Initiative [ADQI] and Acute Kidney Injury Network [AKIN]). ⋯ We observed important variability regarding diagnostic criteria and prevention of AKI in Spanish ICUs, the application of ADQI or AKIN recommendations still being low in our units. Renal replacement therapy seems to generate more concern among our intensivists than AKI management.

[Extracorporeal lung support in patients with severe respiratory failure secondary to the 2010-2011 winter seasonal outbreak of influenza A (H1N1) in Spain].
To describe the use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in refractory respiratory failure. ⋯ The use of ECMO in refractory respiratory failure in patients with influenza A (H1N1) is rare in Spain. The hospital survival achieved with its use allows it to be regarded as a possible rescue technique in these patients.

[Microbiological profile of infections in the Intensive Care Units of Colombia (EPISEPSIS Colombia].
Valid and reliable data regarding sepsis is lacking in Colombia. Our aim was to determine the prevalence of the microorganisms in the main infections treated in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) in our country. ⋯ Pneumonia was the main cause of infection regardless of the site of acquisition. E. coli was the most prevalent germ, except in the pulmonary infections acquired in UCI in which S. aureus was the most prevalent.

[Epidemiology of the primary and vascular catheter-related bacteriemias in critical patients admitted to an Intensive Medicine Department].
In recent years, changes have occurred in the setting of bacteriemia related with the use of vascular catheters (BVC) and with the appearance of multiresistant gram positive cocci (MR-GPC), knowledge of the limitations regarding the antibiotics used most for their treatment (glycopeptides) and the appearance of new antibiotics active against these pathogens. This article analyzes the evolution of the rates, etiologies and markers of multiresistance of the most common pathogens in the BVC (including the primary bacteriemias) in the Spanish Intensive Medicine Departments (ICU). ⋯ The empirical treatment in situations of extreme seriousness should consider coverage of the most frequent pathogens such as the MR-GPC and GNB and in special conditions, the fungi.

[Secondary prevention of alcohol and/or drug abuse in trauma patients: results of a national survey in Spain].
To determine the degree of activity in the field of secondary prevention of alcohol and/or drug abuse in trauma patients in Spain. ⋯ Most centers surveyed are unaware of the usefulness of secondary prevention in trauma patients. This lack of awareness may be responsible for the lack of activity in this field in Spain. A plan to increase awareness, including educational interventions, is necessary to promote secondary prevention of alcohol and drug abuse among trauma patients.
