Atherosclerotic heart disease remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The past few decades have seen the emergence of chronic inflammation as a mediator of atherosclerosis. ⋯ In addition, the rapid emergence of systemic liver diseases has unraveled a pathophysiological link with heart disease with therapeutic implications. In this review, we explore the relationship between the liver and the heart in myocardial ischemia, describe epidemiological associations between various liver pathologies and coronary heart disease, and elucidate practical challenges in the clinical management of patients with concomitant coronary heart disease and hepatic abnormalities.

Incidental Lung Cavity in the Heartland: 70-year Old Woman with Lung Cavity.
Necrotizing sarcoid granulomatosis (NSG) is a rare inflammatory disease. Although considered by some to be a subtype of sarcoidosis, this opinion is not universal. NSG is histologically characterized by the presence of necrotizing sarcoid like granuloma and granulomatous vasculitis. ⋯ The histopathologic analysis revealed sarcoid-like granulomatous inflammation with large necrosis and mild granulomatous vasculitis. The pulmonary function test revealed a restrictive ventilatory defect. The patient was treated with steroid therapy with rapid radiologic and spirometric improvement.

The current coronavirus disease outbreak of 2019 (COVID-19) has led to a global pandemic. The principal cause of mortality in COVID-19 is represented lung injury with the development of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). ⋯ In COVID-19, the spectrum of liver damage may range from direct SARS-CoV-2 viral proteins, inflammatory processes, hypoxemia, the antiviral drugs induced hepatic injury and the presence of the preexisting liver disease. We highlight in this review important topics such as the epidemiological features, potential causes of liver injury, and the strategies for management and prevention of hepatic injury in COVID-19 patients.

The purpose of the current study was to describe the clinico-pathological characteristics and outcomes in patients with lupus nephritis with IgA deposits in the kidneys. ⋯ Patients with IgA deposits presented with milder renal damage and a good prognosis, which suggested its protective role in lupus nephritis.

The presence of the left ventricle (LV) apical thrombus is one of the most critical complications of anterior myocardial infarction (MI). Due to the high risk of systemic embolization, the determination of LV apical thrombus (LVAT) is essential. We aimed to compare the two-dimensional echocardiography (2DE), contrast-2DE and real-time three-dimensional echocardiography (RT-3DE) in the diagnosis of LVAT and determine which imaging modality is superior. ⋯ We found that RT-3DE was more sensitive and more specific than 2DE and contrast-2DE in the diagnosis of LVAT. The diagnostic accuracy of RT-3DE was higher than 2DE and contrast-2DE for LVAT.
