Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is closely related to metabolic syndrome and remains a major global health burden. The increased prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) worldwide has contributed to the rising incidence of NAFLD. It is widely believed that atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is associated with NAFLD. ⋯ To better define fatty liver disease associated with metabolic disorders, experts proposed a new term in 2020 - metabolic dysfunction associated with fatty liver disease (MAFLD). Along with this new designation, updated diagnostic criteria were introduced, resulting in some differentiation between NAFLD and MAFLD patient populations, although there is overlap. The aim of this review is to explore the relationship between MAFLD and ASCVD based on the new definitions and diagnostic criteria, while briefly discussing potential mechanisms underlying cardiovascular disease in patients with MAFLD.

Association Of Estimated Plasma Volume with New Onset Acute Kidney Injury in Hospitalized COVID-19 Patients.
To explore the association of estimated plasma volume (ePV) and plasma volume status (PVS) as surrogates of volume status with new-onset AKI and in-hospital mortality among hospitalized COVID-19 patients. ⋯ A higher PVS correlated with a higher incidence of new-onset AKI and worse outcomes in our cohort of hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Further large-scale and prospective studies are needed to understand its utility.

Men with cystic fibrosis (CF) have sexual health concerns such as delayed puberty, infertility, and hypogonadism. The causes and prevalence of hypogonadism have not been well studied. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of a low testosterone concentration in men with CF. ⋯ Roughly a quarter of men with CF demonstrated low testosterone in our sample. Low hemoglobin was associated with low testosterone levels in men with CF. Neither time of day nor age influenced testosterone concentrations in this sample.

Epidural block with lidocaine ameliorates kidney function deterioration and fibrosis of CKD in rats.
According to evidences from clinical practices and experiments, renal denervation achieved by removing both the afferent and sympathetic nerves has therapeutic impacts on poor renal function and hypertension in chronic kidney disease (CKD). Epidural anesthesia is presumed to function on the target spine segments with a complete sympathetic block. Based on this perspective, we hypothesized that epidural block with lidocaine could ameliorate renal injury in CKD rats. ⋯ Epidural block with lidocaine confers renal protection, which is presumably mediated by decreasing sympathetic nerve activities in the renal region and other target organs in CKD.
