Traditionally, red blood cells (RBCs) have been perceived as passive entities within the fibrin network, without any significant role in the pathophysiology of venous thromboembolism (VTE). This review explores the involvement of RBCs in the VTE process, summarizing previous study findings and providing a comprehensive review of the latest theories. At first, it explores the influence of abnormal RBC counts (as seen in polycythemia vera and with erythropoietin use) and the exposure of RBCs to phosphatidylserine (Ptd-L-Ser) in the pathophysiology of VTE. ⋯ Additionally, we investigate the effect of RBCs on thrombin activation through two pathways, namely, the FXIIa-FXI-FIX pathway and the prekallikrein-dependent pathway. Lastly, we discuss the impact of RBCs on clot volume. In conclusion, we propose several potential methods aimed at unraveling the role of RBCs and their interaction with other components in the vascular system in the pathogenesis of VTE.

The Role of Blood Testing in Prevention, Diagnosis, and Management of Chronic Diseases: A Review.
Blood tests are vital to prevention, diagnosis, and management of chronic diseases. Despite this, it can be challenging to construct a comprehensive view of the clinical importance of blood testing because relevant literature is typically fragmented across different disease areas and patient populations. ⋯ Thus, this review article synthesizes the recommendations for, and importance of, blood testing across several common chronic conditions encountered in primary care and internal medicine, including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease, vitamin D deficiency, iron deficiency, and rheumatoid arthritis. Future research is needed to continue improving chronic disease management through clearer dissemination and awareness of clinical guidelines among providers, and better access to blood testing for patients (e.g., via pre-visit laboratory testing).

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in kidney care has seen a significant rise in recent years. This study specifically analyzed AI and ML research publications related to kidney care to identify leading authors, institutions, and countries in this area. It aimed to examine publication trends and patterns, and to explore the impact of collaborative efforts on citation metrics. ⋯ The findings underscore the importance of AI and ML in enhancing kidney care, offering a roadmap for future research and implementation in this expanding field.

Decompensated cirrhosis is associated with a significantly increased risk of mortality. Variceal hemorrhage (VH) further increases the risk of mortality, and of future variceal bleed events. Non-selective beta-blockers (NSBBs) are effective therapy for primary and secondary prophylaxis of VH and have become the cornerstone of pharmacologic therapy in cirrhosis. ⋯ Long-term treatment with beta-blockers may improve decompensation-free survival in compensated cirrhosis with clinically significant portal hypertension (CSPH). Carvedilol more effectively lowers the hepatic vein portal gradient than traditional NSBBs and has been shown to improve survival in compensated cirrhosis. Treatment goals in compensated cirrhosis with CSPH should focus on early utilization of beta-blockers to prevent decompensation and reduce mortality.

Corticodependent and recurrent inflammatory pseudotumor. Analysis of cases in our province and review.
Inflammatory pseudo tumor (IP) is an infrequent process with benign evolution in most cases whose etiology and pathogenesis are unknown. It usually affects young men and children, in whom the macroscopic lesion can mimic a malignant process, which is ruled out after biopsy. ⋯ We present a case of an inflammatory pseudo tumor with special corticodependence that began as a long-term periodic fever and splenic focal lesion that required splenectomy for its diagnosis and that, after decreasing the corticosteroid regimen, presented recurrences at the cerebellar and systemic level requiring the association of various immunosuppressants and rituximab to achieve remission. As a result of this case, we have performed an analysis of all the pseudo tumors diagnosed in adults in the hospitals of the province of Malaga, and it has been compared with that described in the bibliography.
