To describe a case of cervical flexion myelopathy resulting from a drug overdose. ⋯ Our patient suffered a spinal cord injury likely due to existing cervical stenosis, and in addition to an overdose of sedating medications, he likely sat in flexed neck position for prolonged period of time with the inability to modify his position. This likely resulted in cervical spine vascular and/or neurological compromise producing an irreversible spinal cord injury. Spinal cord injury is a rare finding in patients presenting with drug overdose. The lack of physical exam findings suggestive of trauma may delay prompt diagnosis and treatment, and thus clinicians must have a high index of suspicion when evaluating patients in this setting.

We report a case of a patient who developed anterior thigh compartment syndrome after being positioned prone for instrumented lumbar spine surgery. Although rare, clinicians should be aware that compartment syndrome is a possible complication of spinal surgery.

Various ball and socket-type designs of cervical artificial discs are in use or under investigation. Many artificial disc designs claim to restore the normal kinematics of the cervical spine. What differentiates one type of design from another design is currently not well understood. ⋯ For both spherical and oval designs, the facet loads were lower for the designs with an inferior ball component. The capsule ligament strains were lower for the oval design with an inferior ball component. Overall, the oval design with an inferior ball component, produced motion, facet loads, implant stresses and capsule ligament strains closest to the intact spine, which may be key to long-term implant survival.

Idiopathic scoliosis affects the locomotor system; however, it can considerably impair the function of cardiovascular and respiratory systems. The aim of the study was to assess parameters indicating the physical capacity of adolescent girls with mild or moderate idiopathic scoliosis. ⋯ The maximum oxygen intake and the output during the PWC170 test is lower in girls with moderate scoliosis than in the control group. The value of maximum oxygen intake and output obtained during the PWC170 test in girls with mild scoliosis does not differ significantly from the values obtained in the control group. The number of vertebrae involved in scoliotic deformation and the number of curvatures cause significant decrease in only the relative value of the output obtained during an exercise test.
