A comparative study of axis-line-distance technique and Cobb method on assessing the curative effect on scoliosis.
To compare the axis-line-distance technique (ALDT) and Cobb method for therapeutic evaluation of scoliosis. ⋯ The ALDT is better than the Cobb method for therapeutic evaluation of scoliosis during treatment and at follow-up visits.

When the intervertebral disc is removed to relieve chronic pain, subsequent segment stabilization should restore the functional mechanics of the native disc. Because of partially constrained motions and the lack of intrinsic rotational stiffness ball-on-socket implants present many disadvantages. Composite disc substitutes mimicking healthy disc structures should be able to assume the role expected for a disc substitute with fewer restrictions than ball-on-socket implants. ⋯ All device versions altered the coupled intersegmental shear deformations affecting facet joint contact through contact area displacements. Loads in the bony endplates adjacent to the implants increased as the implant stiffness decreased but did not appear to be a strong limitation for the implant biomechanical and mechanobiological functionality. In conclusion, numerical results given by biomimetic composite disc substitutes were encouraging with greater potential than that offered by ball-on-socket implants.

Use of a personalized hybrid biomechanical model to assess change in lumbar spine function with a TDR compared to an intact spine.
Total disc replacements (TDRs) have been employed with increasing frequency in recent years with the intention of restoring natural motion to the spine and reducing adjacent level trauma. Previous assessments of the TDRs have subjectively measured patient satisfaction, evaluated sagittal range of motion via static imaging, or examined biomechanical loading in vitro. This study examined the kinematics and biomechanical loading of the lumbar spine with an intact spine compared to a TDR inserted at L5/S1 in the same spine. ⋯ At levels above the TDR insertion, larger ROM was present during the lifting conditions. Sagittal motions were often greater at the higher lumbar levels, but there appeared to be less lateral and twisting motion. Collectively, this analysis indicates that the insertion of a TDR significantly alters the function of the spine.

We hypothesized that L5-S1 kinematics will not be affected by the lordosis distribution between the prosthesis endplates. ⋯ Further clinical and biomechanical studies are needed to assess the long-term impact of lordosis angle distribution on the fate of the facet joints.

Eosinophilic granuloma (EG) is a benign bone tumor that rarely occurs in adults. It is usually found occurring in flat and long bones, but spine is often affected too. EG is of unknown aetiology, and the course of the disease is unpredictable. ⋯ CT scan guided trocar biopsy allowed to achieve a definitive diagnosis, and CT scan guided intralesional infiltrations of corticosteroids were the successful treatment.
