Minimally invasive resection of extradural dumbbell tumors of thoracic spine: surgical techniques and literature review.
Dumbbell-shaped thoracic tumors represent a distinct type of tumor and involve in both the spinal canal and the posterior thoracic cavity. Successful treatment for the tumors depends on gross total resection (GTR) via an open laminectomy and facetectomy or transthoracic transpleural approach. In this case series, we report our experiments with minimally invasive method for the removal of extradural dumbbell thoracic tumor and present related literature review. ⋯ If the medial border of intracanal component of extradural dumbbell tumor is near the midline of canal and the pedicles of adjacent vertebrae to tumor are intact, minimally invasive resection of tumor through unilateral paraspinal muscle approach combined with unilateral TTIF is good choice.

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and percutaneous vertebroplasty (PVP) are used independently and in combination to treat metastatically involved vertebrae with the aim of relieving pain, reducing tumour burden and providing bony mechanical stabilization. ⋯ RFA combined with cement deposition in the posterior vertebral body demonstrates significantly more stable vertebrae under axial loading.

Total en bloc spondylectomy for locally aggressive and primary malignant tumors of the lumbar spine.
To report outcomes after total en bloc spondylectomy (TES) for primary aggressive/malignant tumors of the lumbar spine. ⋯ Although favorable oncological outcomes after en bloc resection of spinal tumors may be achieved in terms of recurrence and survival, TES in the lumbar spine remains a challenging procedure. Future investigation into complication avoidance and reconstruction techniques is encouraged.

To determine the effect of preoperative embolization on intraoperative blood loss in surgery for metastatic spinal tumours stratified by tumour type, type of surgical approach and extent of surgery. ⋯ Our study demonstrated that success of embolization in reducing blood loss depends on the extent of embolization and time interval between embolization and index surgery.

This study evaluated the relationship between spinal TB postoperative recurrence or non-healing and duration of preoperative anti-TB treatment (ATT). ⋯ Duration of preoperative ATT may not be a risk factor for postoperative recurrence or non-healing of spinal TB. Junctional zones such as the lumbosacral and thoracolumbar junction have a higher recurrence rate than non junctional.
