Genetic differences on intracranial versus spinal cord ependymal tumors: a meta-analysis of genetic researches.
Although ependymomas occur in both the brain and the spine, the prognosis is quite varied by tumor location. Spinal ependymomas usually follow a relatively benign course with more favorable prognosis than that of the intracranial ependymomas. The aim of this study is to evaluate the genetic differences between spinal ependymomas and their intracranial counterparts using a meta-analysis. ⋯ The genetic aberrations of spinal ependymomas are quite different from those of intracranial ependymomas. The difference in prognosis of ependymoma by location may be associated with genetic difference. A more detailed understanding of them may enable the development of targeted therapy and the estimation of prognosis.

To describe certain anatomical variations of the foramen transversarium, in spine cervical vertebrae in a contemporary specimen of an Indo-European population and approach their clinical importance during cervical spine surgery. ⋯ Summarizing, 10 out of our 17 skeletons were presented with variations (extremely narrow or multiple foramina). This finding of hypoplastic, duplicated and triplicated foramina transversaria in unexpectedly high rates raises questions about the integrity of the contained structures, the possibility of a different path for them. These variations may induce an extra-osseous position of the vertebra artery, and the ignorance of such an event may have catastrophic consequences during a surgery in the cervical spine.

Minimally invasive resection of extradural dumbbell tumors of thoracic spine: surgical techniques and literature review.
Dumbbell-shaped thoracic tumors represent a distinct type of tumor and involve in both the spinal canal and the posterior thoracic cavity. Successful treatment for the tumors depends on gross total resection (GTR) via an open laminectomy and facetectomy or transthoracic transpleural approach. In this case series, we report our experiments with minimally invasive method for the removal of extradural dumbbell thoracic tumor and present related literature review. ⋯ If the medial border of intracanal component of extradural dumbbell tumor is near the midline of canal and the pedicles of adjacent vertebrae to tumor are intact, minimally invasive resection of tumor through unilateral paraspinal muscle approach combined with unilateral TTIF is good choice.

Comparison of clinical efficacy and safety among three surgical approaches for the treatment of spinal tuberculosis: a meta-analysis.
We aimed to provide evidence for clinical choice of surgical approach in treating spinal tuberculosis, including anterior, posterior and combined approaches (combined anterior and posterior approach). ⋯ Posterior approach has better clinical outcomes than anterior or combined approach for spinal tuberculosis. However, individual assessment of each case should be considered in the clinical application of these surgical approaches.

Surgical management of spinal liposarcoma: a case series of 7 patients and literature review.
Liposarcoma, one of the most common soft tissue sarcomas originates from primitive mesenchymal cells. But spinal involvement of either primary or metastatic liposarcoma is rare. Here we present our experience of seven consecutive patients with spinal liposarcoma. ⋯ The outcome and prognosis of spinal liposarcoma is poor, and surgical resections should be considered when diagnosis is confirmed. For those whose tumors were too large to resect and/or with multiple metastases, effective treatment options are currently limited. Therefore, multidisciplinary treatment should be adopted, intraoperative chemotherapy, systemic chemotherapy and radiotherapy for instance.
