Selective hemivertebrae resection in a congenital scoliosis patient with multiple hemivertebrae deformities.
To report the surgical experience of selective hemivertebrae resection for a case of congenital scoliosis with multiple hemivertebrae deformities. ⋯ Many factors have to be considered in the clinical decision-making of congenital scoliosis with multiple hemivertebrae deformities patients. Much emphasis in this regard is laid on the type and location of the hemivertebrae as well as the patient's age. Selective hemivertebrae resection may be more suitable for such patients.

Isolated thoracoplasty (iTP) on the convex side is performed long time after scoliosis surgery has been performed. ITP is thought to cause a further decline in pulmonary function (PF); however, the amount of decline is ill defined. The objectives of this study were to examine the influence of iTP on the postoperative evolution of PF and rib hump reduction in patients that previously undergone scoliosis surgery. ⋯ Isolated TP was shown an effective technique for rib hump resection. Six years after iTP, the FVC% declined by an average of 9%. Several patients had long-lasting effects in terms of %FVC decline. iTP should be reserved for patients with significant rib hump deformity.

Clinical balance tests, proprioceptive system and adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.
Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a three-dimensional deformity of the spinal column of unknown etiology. Multiple factors could be involved, including neurosensory pathways and, potentially, an elective disorder of dynamic proprioception. The purpose of this study was to determine whether routine balance tests could be used to demonstrate an elective alteration of dynamic proprioception in AIS. ⋯ These findings confirm recent AIS studies. Our results might be related to immature central integration of dynamic proprioceptive input leading to a poorly adapted motor response, particularly for postural control of the, in AIS. These balance tests can be performed in routine practice. Their validity as a biomarker for screening and monitoring purposes should be assessed.

The minimal clinically important difference (MCID) of the Appearance domain of the SRS-22 questionnaire is an increase ≥1.0 in surgically treated patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). However, no study has sought to identify the factors associated with an SRS-22 Appearance score increase greater than the MCID at 2 years. ⋯ II.
