The aim of this systematic review is to describe the epidemiology of chordoma and to provide a clear overview of clinical prognostic factors predicting progression-free and overall survival. ⋯ Incidence rate and anatomical distribution vary between countries and presumably between races. Most chordomas arise in the skull base and sacrococcygeal spine, and the tumour shows clear male predominance. Multiple adverse prognostic factors predicting progression-free and overall survival were identified in subgroups of patients. These slides can be retrieved under Electronic Supplementary Material.

The practice of prehospital immobilization is coming under increasing scrutiny. Unravelling the historical sequence of prehospital immobilization might shed more light on this matter and help resolve the situation. Main purpose of this review is to provide an overview of the development and reasoning behind the implementation of prehospital spine immobilization. ⋯ Although widely implementation of spinal immobilization to prevent spinal cord injury in both penetrating and blunt injury, it cannot be explained historically. Furthermore, there is no high-level scientific evidence to support or reject immobilisation in blunt injury. Since evidence in favour and against prehospital immobilization is equally divided, the present situation appears to have reached something of a deadlock. These slides can be retrieved under Electronic Supplementary Material.

Cryosurgery in the excision of a giant local recurrent sacral chordoma: a case report and literature review.
Chordoma is a low-grade malignant tumor with recurrence and metastasis tendency that originates from embryonic notochordal remnants. The sacrococcygeal region is the most commonly involved site. The aim of this paper is to report the results of the use of cryosurgery in the excision of a giant recurrent sacral chordoma and review of pertinent literature. ⋯ Given the gelatinous structure of the tumor and the possibility of contamination of operatory field, cryosurgery may be indicated when previous surgeries and the dimensions of tumor mass do not allow a resection with negative margins improving radiotherapy efficacy in the local control of tumor.

To clarify the clinical features, surgical strategies, and outcomes of intraosseous schwannoma (IOS) of the mobile spine. ⋯ CT-guided biopsy is effective for the preoperative diagnosis of spinal IOS. Total resection is the optimal treatment for IOS, whereas subtotal resection could be an alternative choice for high-risk cases. These slides can be retrieved under electronic supplementary material.
