Write a letter to editors concerning: Comparison of cervical, thoracic, and lumbar vertebral bone quality scores for increased utility of bone mineral density screening by Razzouk et al. (Eur Spine J https://doi.org/10.1007/s00586-022-07484-5 , 2022). We try to compare the targeted article with a similar article to talk about cervical vertebral bone quality (VBQ). ⋯ We advised the targeted article's authors to try their research again in another way of calculation of cervical VBQ like the contrast article.

Patient blood management has been recently emphasized to avoid perioperative blood transfusion in AIS surgery. Hydroxyapatite charged collagen sponge (HCS) is a bone substitute material made of collagen and ceramized hydroxyapatite, with associated haemostatic properties. The goal of this study was to assess the impact of HCS in the perioperative blood loss in AIS surgery. ⋯ With 27% reduction in drain volume, hydroxyapatite charged collagen sponge can be considered as a blood salving strategy in AIS surgery. The role of the biomaterial in fusion rate still needs to be further assessed.

Combined flexion and compression negatively impact the mechanical integrity of the annulus fibrosus.
To observe the effect of static flexion, in combination with compression, on the intralamellar and interlamellar matrix properties of the annulus fibrosus. ⋯ The current findings suggest that the mechanical properties of the interlamellar and intralamellar matrices are sensitive to flexion, creating an environment that promotes an increased potential for damage to occur.

The purpose of this study was to assess the utility of low muscle mass (LMM) in predicting 90-day and 12-month mortality after spinal tumor surgery. ⋯ Patients with LMM had higher rates of 90-day and 12-month mortality in our study, but this was not independent of other parameters such as performance status, hypoalbuminemia, or primary cancer type.

Conditional survival (CS) provides a dynamic prediction of patient survival by incorporating the time an individual has already survived given their disease specific characteristics. The objective of the current study was to estimate CS among patients after surgery for spinal cord compression or spinal instability, as well as stratify CS according to relevant patient- and disease-related characteristics. ⋯ Level IV (retrospective cohort study).
