This study aimed to compare the clinical features and postoperative outcomes in patients with Lenke type 5C AIS in the early and late teens. ⋯ In patients with Lenke type 5C AIS, we showed that late teens had significantly worse SRS-22r scores than did early teens. Postoperative coronal malalignment was frequently observed in the late teens due to the reduced ability of compensation by subjacent disc wedging.

Raftlin and 8-iso-prostaglandin F2α levels and gene network analysis in patients with Modic changes.
Oxidative stress in the vertebral endplates of patients with low back pain and Modic changes (MCs) (types I, II, and III) endplate changes on magnetic resonance imaging. 8-iso-prostaglandin F2α (8-iso-PGF2α) has been proposed as new indicator of oxidative stress. Raftlin, as an inflammatory biomarker, has been previously reported in inflammatory diseases. Oxidative stress plays an important role in various human diseases. This study was aimed to assess Raftlin and 8-iso-PGF2α levels in patients with MCs. ⋯ Our findings indicated that oxidative stress in patients with MC-I may be aggravated and it may cause an inflammation formation of the lesion areas in these patients. Also, the increased 8-iso-PGF2α and Raftlin levels in patients with MC-II and MC-III may be an adaptive response to against oxidative stress.

Impairment of coagulation parameters and increased rate of thromboembolism are known complications of COVID-19 infection. In this study the coagulation profile and rate of thromboembolic events between two groups of patients who underwent spinal surgery before and after the COVID-19 pandemic was compared. ⋯ The rate of thromboembolic events seems to be increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. These findings urge more stringent monitoring of the patients' coagulation parameters during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Predictors of poor outcome following lumbar spinal fusion surgery: a prospective observational study to derive two clinical prediction rules using British Spine Registry data.
Lumbar spinal fusion surgery (LSFS) is common for lumbar degenerative disorders. The objective was to develop clinical prediction rules to identify which patients are likely to have a favourable outcome to inform decisions regarding surgery and rehabilitation. ⋯ BMI, ODI, leg and back pain and previous surgery are important considerations pre-operatively to inform decisions for surgery. Pre-operative leg and back pain and work status are important considerations to inform decisions for management following surgery. Findings may inform clinical decision making regarding LSFS and associated rehabilitation.

To report and analyze development trends in the surgical treatment of congenital scoliosis (CS) in a large CS cohort over a 10-year period. ⋯ During this ten-year period, the surgical treatment of CS at our institute showed trends toward a younger age at fusion, lower number of fused segments, higher rate of osteotomy and titanium cage implantation, reduced blood loss, shorter length of stay and lower rate complications and readmission. These results suggest performing osteotomy combined with titanium cage implantation at an earlier age can achieve fewer fused segments and complications.
