This is the first study to evaluate the predictive value of the vertebral bone quality (VBQ) score on cage subsidence after transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) in a Chinese population using the spinal quantitative computed tomography (QCT) as the clinical standard. Meanwhile, the accuracy of the MRI-based VBQ score in bone mineral density (BMD) measurement was verified. ⋯ Our findings indicate that the MRI-based VBQ score is a significant predictor of cage subsidence and could be used to assess BMD.

The aim of this study was to determine whether the presence of abdominal aortic calcification (AAC) can predict patient bone status, represented by volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) assessed with quantitative computed tomography (QCT). ⋯ The presence of AAC may identify patients at risk for impaired bone status. Preoperative evaluation of standard lumbar radiographs could be used as a potential diagnostic tool in assessing bone status.

Proximal junctional kyphosis is a commonly encountered clinical and radiographic phenomenon after pediatric and adolescent spinal deformity surgery that may lead to postoperative deformity, pain, and dissatisfaction. The purpose of the study was to identify whether the placement of transverse process hooks is an effective way to prevent PJK. ⋯ Placement of transverse process hooks at the UIV level in posterior spinal fusion surgery for AIS patients was associated with decreased risk of PJK. A larger preoperative kyphosis and greater degree of kyphosis correction correlated with PJK.

The aim of this study is to identify the incidence, clinical features, and risk factors for postoperative acute pancreatitis (PAP) after lumbar surgery. ⋯ The incidence of PAP following posterior surgery for degenerative lumbar disease was 0.10%, and its clinical features were not typical. The fusion of L1/2, high surgical invasiveness index, and low intraoperative mean arterial pressure were independent risk factors for PAP after surgery for lumbar degenerative disease.
