The burden of scoliosis: a nationwide database study on demographics, incidence, and surgical rates.
Scoliosis is characterized as a three-dimensional deformity of the spine, affected by variety of factors, including biological, mechanical, hormonal, and genetics. ⋯ Our findings reveal a significant increase in the average incidence of scoliosis diagnosis, rising from 107 per 100,000 individuals in 2015 to 161 per 100,000 in 2022. Scoliosis now impacts an estimated 1.2% of children and adolescents in Turkey. The risk is 1.45 times higher in females than in males.

The middle cluneal nerve (MCN) is a pure sensory nerve around the middle buttock. Its entrapment between the iliac crest and the long posterior sacroiliac ligament elicits low back pain (LBP) that can be treated by MCN neurolysis or neurectomy. Because few studies examined the pathology of MCN entrapment (MCN-E) we subjected 7 neurectomized specimens from 6 LBP patients to pathologic study. ⋯ We present pathological evidence at the MCN compression site of 7 nerves from 6 patients whose LBP was alleviated by MCN neurectomy, indicating that MCN entrapment can elicit LBP.

This study aimed to investigate the impact of the severity of cervical ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) on the incidence of arteriosclerosis in the carotid artery. ⋯ Patients with a larger cervical OPLL showed a higher frequency of intima-media thickening in the carotid artery.

Three-column osteotomies (TCOs) and minimally invasive techniques such as anterior column realignment (ACR) are powerful tools used to restore lumbar lordosis and sagittal alignment. We aimed to appraise the differences in construct and global spinal stability between TCOs and ACRs in long constructs. ⋯ In patients with long constructs who undergo ACR or TCO, we experienced a 20% rate of PJK. TCO decreased PJK 6.1-times compared to ACR. TCO demonstrated greater improvement of some spinopelvic parameters.

To understand how the axial plane deformity contributes to progression of the three-dimensional spinal deformity of Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS), with a main thoracic curve type, using a series of sequential magnetic resonance images (MRI). ⋯ AVR increased, during curve progression, most markedly at the curve apex. The greatest IVR was observed at the periapical levels, with the apex by contrast having only a modest degree of rotation, suggesting the periapical vertebral levels of the scoliosis deformity may be a significant driver in the progression of AIS.
