The study aims to assess if the angle of trunk rotation (ATR) in combination with other readily measurable clinical parameters allows for effective non-invasive scoliosis screening. ⋯ Machine-learning-based classification models have the potential to effectively improve the non-invasive screening for AIS. The results of the study constitute the basis for the development of easy-to-use tools enabling physicians to decide whether to prescribe radiographic imaging.

Hounsfield unit (HU) measurements and vertebral bone quality (VBQ) scores are opportunistic screening methods for evaluating bone quality. Since studies comparing the efficacies of the two methods are rare, this retrospective study aimed to examine the efficacy of VBQ scores compared with that of HU measurements for diagnosing osteoporosis in lumbar spine surgery patients. ⋯ The calculation of VBQ scores is a novel opportunistic screening method for diagnosing osteoporosis; however, CT-based HU measurements outperform MRI-based VBQ scores. HU measurements can be used as a screening method when pre-operative CT scans are available.

To review and describe the development, methods and cohort of the lumbosacral part of the Norwegian registry for spine surgery (NORspine). ⋯ NORspine is a well-designed population-based comprehensive national clinical quality registry. The register's methods ensure appropriate data for quality surveillance and improvement, and research.

It has been suggested that the cause of the balance disorder seen in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) originates from the central nervous system. However, the extent of the balance problem and the dysfunction of which part of the central nervous system has not been investigated in detail. This study aimed to correlate the values obtained by balance analysis and cerebellum volume measurement in female individuals with AIS with healthy individuals. ⋯ Balance problems in patients with AIS are correlated with decreased cerebellum volume and increased trunk oscillation velocity.

Adult degenerative scoliosis (ADS) is a 3D deformity that greatly affects the quality of life of patients and is closely related to the quality of paraspinal muscles (PSMs), but the specific degenerative characteristics have not been described. ⋯ There were significant differences in the MV and FI of PSM on both sides of the spine in ADS patients. It was determined that the PSM of ADS showed different degrees of degeneration in different levels of the lumbar spine and were positively correlated with Cobb angle.
