To assess the outcome measures used in studies investigating cervical spine fractures in adults, with or without associated spinal cord injury, to inform development of a core outcome set. ⋯ We have classified the various outcome measures used for patients with cervical spine fractures based on the COMET outcome taxonomy. We also described the contexts in which different outcomes are more commonly employed to help guide decision-making when designing future research endeavors.

Learning curve for minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion: a systematic review.
Minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (MI-TLIF) is commonly used to treat degenerative lumbar spinal disorders. It facilitates a full-scale spinal decompression and interbody fusion with minimal neural retraction using the tubular retractor system. Despite the benefits of surgical efficiency and minimalism, this technique requires a long learning curve. There is currently no consensus on the learning curve characteristics and proper training methods for MI-TLIF. Thus, this systematic review aimed to discuss the cutoff point at which technical proficiency is achieved and ways to enhance the learning process. ⋯ The plateau point in the learning curve for MI-TLIF may differ according to the outcome measures used. Most studies have demonstrated the learning progress based on simple task efficiency, rather than patient outcomes. Moreover, the learning rate may be affected by the patients' and technical conditions. Therefore, great care is required in interpreting the learning curve and cutoff point for MI-TLIF proficiency.

Globally, spine disorders are the leading cause of disability, affecting more than half a billion individuals. However, less than 50% of G20 countries specifically identify spine health within their public policy priorities. Therefore, it is crucial to raise awareness among policy makers of the disabling effect of spine disorders and their impact on the economic welfare of G20 nations. In 2019, SPINE20 was established as the leading advocacy group to bring global attention to spine disorders. ⋯ SPINE20 advocacy efforts focus on developing public policy recommendations to improve the health, welfare, and wellness of all who suffer from spinal pain and disability. We propose that focusing on facilitating access to systems that prioritize value-based care delivered by a competent healthcare workforce will reduce disability and improve the productivity of the G20 nations.

Cesarean sections (CS) under spinal anesthesia may lead to newly developed low back pain (LBP) after anesthesia. The cause of this pain is still unknown. This subject was investigated. ⋯ This study shows anesthesia type as spinal or general was not associated with increased persistent LBP. Performing more spinal than general anesthesia in the cesarean section may be false data about the increased rate of LBP after CS.

To present a case of delayed aortic perforation due to a nondisplaced fracture of the 9th rib after vertebral osteotomy for degenerative kyphoscoliosis in patients with osteoporosis. ⋯ This report describes a new critical complication after spinal correction surgery. Even without pedicle screw malposition, aortic injuries can happen to patients with osteoporosis after corrective osteotomy for degenerative kyphoscoliosis due to positional change of aorta and fragility of the ribs. The spine surgeon should be aware of this type of complication, and rib fractures around the aorta after vertebral osteotomy should not be neglected even when there is no displacement.
