Pedicle subtraction osteotomy in the thoracic spine and thoracolumbar junction: a retrospective series of 28 cases.
Pedicle subtraction osteotomy is a well-described surgical technique for treatment of kyphotic deformity in the spine. It is not widely used for treatment of thoracic kyphosis. We present the first documented series of 28 patients who underwent this procedure in 3 international centers. These patients presented with severe deformity with a wide range of aetiologies. ⋯ Global sagittal balance was statistically improved in this series as demonstrated by FBI and C7 SVA correction.

Validity of the French version of the Core Outcome Measures Index for low back pain patients: a prospective cohort study.
Among the many questionnaires available to evaluate low back pain (LBP) patients, the Core Outcome Measures Index (COMI) has the unique advantage to investigate five dimensions using seven short questions. The aim of this study was to explore additional properties of the questionnaire in a French-speaking non-surgical population. ⋯ The COMI is a self-report questionnaire with the capacity to easily and quickly explore several dimensions in patients with LBP that can be then summarized in a meaningful sum score. Additional knowledge provided by our study should encourage the widespread use of the COMI among the spine community.

Stand-alone ALIF with integrated intracorporeal anchoring plates in the treatment of degenerative lumbar disc disease: a prospective study on 65 cases.
ALIF with cages is expected to restore disc height and stabilize the spine promoting fusion, while avoiding damage attributed to rod-pedicle screw fixation. However, it may be related to an increased risk of fusion failure and subsidence. A prospective study was conducted by five investigators across three centers to confirm performance of a PEEK cage for stand-alone ALIF in the treatment of lumbar degenerative disc disease (DDD). ⋯ Safety and efficacy of this stand-alone cage with integrated intracorporeal plates was confirmed through 12 months for treatment of degenerative conditions. The design of the cage and plates may contribute to the decreased subsidence rate observed.

To conduct a retrospective multicenter study to investigate the accuracy of pedicle screw (PS) placement in the cervical spine by freehand technique and the related complications in various pathological conditions including trauma, rheumatoid arthritis, degenerative conditions and others. ⋯ Malposition rate of PS placement in the cervical spine by freehand technique was high in rheumatoid patients even when being performed by experienced spine surgeons. Any guidance tools including navigation systems are recommended for placement of cervical PSs in patients with RA.

Public and private health service in Norway: a comparison of patient characteristics and surgery criteria for patients with nerve root affections due to discus herniation.
To compare sociodemographic, life style and clinical characteristics in patients operated for lumbar disc herniation in public and private clinics in Norway, and evaluate whether selection for surgery and surgical treatment were different across the two settings. ⋯ Patients having elective surgery due to lumbar disc herniation in public and private clinics were different with respect to many sociodemographic and life style variables. There were minor differences with respect to clinical variables and selection of patients for surgery, but substantial differences related to aspects of the surgical treatment.
