Review Meta Analysis
Utilizing the commodity purchase task to evaluate behavioral economic demand for illicit substances: a review and meta-analysis.
The commodity purchase task is a simulated demand procedure that is easy and quick to complete (< 5 minutes) as well as adaptable for remote delivery and use with varied study populations. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to synthesize research using the commodity purchase task with illicit substances to evaluate the magnitude of omnibus effects sizes and moderators of the correlation of demand indices with quantity-frequency (QF) and severity measures. ⋯ Behavioral economic demand as measured by the commodity purchase task is consistently correlated with measures of illicit substance use quantity-frequency and severity.

Although the prevalence of gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) use is relatively low globally, harms related to the drug appear to be increasing. Few existing studies present reliable, representative, population-level data on GHB-related harms. The aim of this study was to investigate trends in acute GHB-related harms within an ambulance database in Australia. ⋯ There has been a 147% increase in the prevalence of GHB-related ambulance attendances in Victoria, Australia between 2012 and 2019, largely attributable to a growth in the proportions of people using gamma-hydroxybutyrate alone or concurrently with methamphetamine.

To examine how the risks of incident opioid use disorder (OUD), non-fatal and fatal overdose have changed over time among opioid-naive individuals receiving an initial opioid prescription. ⋯ Among opioid-naive individuals in Massachusetts receiving an initial opioid prescription, the risk of incident opioid use disorder appears to have declined between 2011 and 2014, while rates of overdose were largely unchanged. Longer therapy duration and concurrent benzodiazepines were associated with higher rates of opioid use disorder and opioid overdose.

Opioid-related overdose is increasingly linked to pregnancy-associated deaths, but factors associated with postpartum overdose are unknown. We aimed to estimate the strength of the association between maternal and infant characteristics and postpartum opioid-related overdose. ⋯ There were 189 deliveries to women who experienced ≥ 1 opioid overdose in the first year postpartum (11 of 10 000 deliveries). Among women with postpartum opioid overdose, 46.6% had an OUD diagnosis within 12 months before delivery. In our adjusted model, maternal diagnosis of OUD [adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 3.61, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.73-7.51] and prior non-fatal overdose (aOR = 2.40, 95% CI = 1.11-5.17) were most strongly associated with postpartum overdose. After stratifying by OUD status, infant diagnosis of NAS (OUD+ aOR = 2.03, 95% CI = 1.26-3.27; OUD- aOR = 2.79, 95% CI = 1.12-6.93) and high unscheduled health-care utilization (OUD+ aOR = 2.27, 95% CI = 1.38-3.73; OUD- aOR = 2.11, 95% CI = 1.24-3.58) were positively associated with postpartum overdose in both groups.

To quantify associations between the success of smoking quit attempts and factors that have varied throughout 2007-2018 at a population level. ⋯ In England between 2007 and 2018, licensing of nicotine replacement therapy for use in harm reduction, greater use of e-cigarettes and prescription medications during a quit attempt and higher expenditure on tobacco control mass media were all associated with higher success rates of quit attempts.
