Multicenter Study Observational StudyPain severity as a mediator of the association between depressive symptoms and physical performance in knee osteoarthritis.
Depressive symptoms in knee osteoarthritis (OA) are associated with increased pain severity and declines in physical performance. This study examined whether pain severity mediates the association between depressive symptoms and physical performance in persons with radiographic knee OA. ⋯ Pain severity mediated approximately one-fifth of the association between depressive symptoms and physical performance in persons with radiographic knee OA, and the diminishing incremental effects may explain why unimodal treatment strategies with a single disease target are often ineffective in depressed OA patients.

Multicenter StudyTrends in procedure type, patient characteristics, and outcomes among persons with knee osteoarthritis undergoing bariatric surgery, 2005-2014.
To evaluate trends in the utilization, clinical characteristics, and inpatient outcomes among persons with knee osteoarthritis undergoing bariatric surgery. ⋯ Although growing evidence suggests that bariatric surgery is associated with improvements in osteoarthritis pain and functional status, the utilization of bariatric surgery among morbidly obese persons with knee osteoarthritis remained consistent from 2005 to 2014. Bariatric surgery in persons with knee osteoarthritis is generally safe, as inpatient complication and mortality rates remained low despite an increase in age and number of comorbidities.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyEfficacy and safety of single-dose onabotulinumtoxinA in the treatment of symptoms of osteoarthritis of the knee: results of a placebo-controlled, double-blind study.
To evaluate intraarticular onabotulinumtoxinA 400 U and 200 U in reducing symptoms of knee osteoarthritis (OA) in patients with nociceptive pain. ⋯ NCT02230956.

Multicenter Study Observational StudyKnee thrust prevalence and normative hip-knee-ankle angle deviation values among healthy individuals across the lifespan.
To report the prevalence of varus thrust and normative values for hip-knee-ankle (HKA) angle deviation across the lifespan, and to explore associations between HKA angle deviation and selected clinical factors. ⋯ Prevalence of varus thrust is common across the lifespan. Normative values established here can be readily used by clinicians and researchers in monitoring this gait deviation.

Multicenter Study Observational StudyDoes the intensity of daily walking matter for protecting against the development of a slow gait speed in people with or at high risk of knee osteoarthritis? An observational study.
Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a risk factor for a decline in gait speed. Daily walking reduces the risk of developing slow gait speed and future persistent functional limitation. However, the protective role of walking intensity is unclear. We investigated the association of substituting time spent not walking, with walking at light and moderate-to-vigorous intensities for incident slow gait over 2-years, among people with or at high risk of knee OA. ⋯ When possible, walking at a moderate-to-vigorous intensity (>100 steps/min) may be best recommended in order to reduce the risk of developing critical slow gait speed among people with, or at high risk of knee OA.
