CROATIAN VERSION OF THE QUALITY OF RECOVERY QUESTIONNAIRE (QoR-40): TRANSCULTURAL ADAPTATION AND VALIDATION.
The Quality of Recovery-40 (QoR-40) questionnaire is a psychometric instrument designed to quantify postoperative recovery. It has been translated and validated in several countries but not in Croatia. The aim was to translate, cross-culturally adapt, and validate Croatian version of the QoR-40. ⋯ Internal consistency was good for global QoR-40 score (Cronbach α=0.896), acceptable across all domains (8>α≥7). There was a significant correlation between grip strength and total QoR-40 score, pain, and physical independence, but not with other domains. In conclusion, the Croatian version of the QoR-40 has acceptable properties and can be used in the assessment of postoperative recovery in Croatian patients.

Randomized Controlled TrialEFFICACY OF CYCLOCRYOTHERAPY AND TRANSSCLERAL DIODE LASER CYCLOPHOTOCOAGULATION IN THE MANAGEMENT OF REFRACTORY GLAUCOMA.
Treating advanced glaucoma often requires numerous therapeutic modalities in order to achieve the desired intraocular pressure (IOP) reduction. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the IOP lowering efficacy of both cyclocryotherapy (CCT) and transscleral diode laser cyclophotocoagulation (TS-DCPC) in the management of refractory primary open-angle glaucoma. This prospective, randomized, controlled clinical trial included 40 patients (40 eyes) with refractory glaucoma treated at the Eye Department, Clinical Center of Vojvodina, Novi Sad, Serbia, between January 2016 and June 2019. ⋯ Follow-up measurements of IOP in group 2 showed the following results: 16.00 mm Hg (IQR, 10.00-17.00) (48% decrease from the baseline value), 14.00 mm Hg (IQR, 10.00-16.00) (56% decrease from the baseline value), 14.00 mm Hg (IQR, 12.25-16.50) (43% decrease from the baseline value) and 14.00 mm Hg (IQR, 11.25-15.75) (53% decrease from the baseline value) after 7 days, 1, 6 and 12 months, respectively. The mean number of antiglaucoma drugs used decreased from 4 to 0.65±0.81 and 2.25±1.07 in groups 1 and 2, respectively. In conclusion, study results confirmed the CCT and TS-DCPC to have a rapid and statistically significant ocular hypotensive effect in eyes with refractory glaucoma at one-year follow-up.

ANALGESIC EFFECT OF TRAMADOL IS NOT ALTERED BY POSTOPERATIVE SYSTEMIC INFLAMMATION AFTER MAJOR ABDOMINAL SURGERY.
Tramadol is a commonly used analgesic in intensive care units (ICUs) for acute postoperative pain. Conversion of tramadol into active metabolites may be impaired in inflammatory states. Catechol-O-methyltransferase may influence pain. ⋯ A negative correlation was observed between the preoperative values of CRP and PCT and the analgesic effect of tramadol assessed at the second measurement point (r=-0.358, p=0.03, and r=-0.364, p=0.02, respectively). Catechol-O-methyltransferase variants were not in correlation with pain and opioid consumption. Based on our findings, tramadol is effective in lowering pain scores after major abdominal surgery irrespective of the presence of systemic inflammation.

THE COST OF KIDNEY TRANSPLANTATION AT THE MERKUR UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL, ZAGREB, CROATIA.
The aim was to determine the cost of hospitalization for a transplant procedure and identify the independent variables associated with the cost of transplantation. The investigation was designed as a retrospective single-center cohort study conducted at a tertiary university hospital transplant center in Zagreb, Croatia. The study included 219 consecutive kidney recipients transplanted during the 2007-2013 period at the Merkur University Hospital. ⋯ In the bivariate analysis, the variables associated with the cost of transplantation were the length of hospital stay, delayed graft function, death of the patient, graft loss, use of steroids, and death-censored graft loss. In the multivariate analysis, delayed graft function was the only statistically significant variable for the cost of transplantation. Since only delayed graft function had an impact on the cost of transplantation in this study, certain steps such as shortening of the cold ischemia time (better organization of organ transport), better education of family members for living donors, and higher percentage of patients on peritoneal dialysis should be taken to lower the percentage of delayed graft function.

ASSESSMENT OF CYTOGENETIC DAMAGE TO EXFOLIATED GINGIVAL CELLS IN PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC GENERALIZED PERIODONTITIS.
The aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the occurrence of chromosomal abnormalities through the frequency of micronuclei and other genomic damage markers in patients with chronic generalized periodontitis and without periodontal disease. Micronucleus assay was performed in exfoliated gingival epithelial cells of 35 patients with generalized chronic periodontitis and 30 control subjects with healthy periodontium. Full mouth clinical examination was performed to define periodontal condition. ⋯ Differences between the groups were not significant (p=0.574). Compared to control subjects, patients with chronic periodontitis showed a significant increase in the number of binucleated cells (p≤0.001) and number of cells with nucleoplasmic bridges (p=0.042). Study results indicated that chronic periodontitis was not associated with higher occurrence of chromosomal damage in gingival cells compared to individuals with healthy periodontium.
