ASSESSMENT OF CYTOGENETIC DAMAGE TO EXFOLIATED GINGIVAL CELLS IN PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC GENERALIZED PERIODONTITIS.
The aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the occurrence of chromosomal abnormalities through the frequency of micronuclei and other genomic damage markers in patients with chronic generalized periodontitis and without periodontal disease. Micronucleus assay was performed in exfoliated gingival epithelial cells of 35 patients with generalized chronic periodontitis and 30 control subjects with healthy periodontium. Full mouth clinical examination was performed to define periodontal condition. ⋯ Differences between the groups were not significant (p=0.574). Compared to control subjects, patients with chronic periodontitis showed a significant increase in the number of binucleated cells (p≤0.001) and number of cells with nucleoplasmic bridges (p=0.042). Study results indicated that chronic periodontitis was not associated with higher occurrence of chromosomal damage in gingival cells compared to individuals with healthy periodontium.

THE COST OF KIDNEY TRANSPLANTATION AT THE MERKUR UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL, ZAGREB, CROATIA.
The aim was to determine the cost of hospitalization for a transplant procedure and identify the independent variables associated with the cost of transplantation. The investigation was designed as a retrospective single-center cohort study conducted at a tertiary university hospital transplant center in Zagreb, Croatia. The study included 219 consecutive kidney recipients transplanted during the 2007-2013 period at the Merkur University Hospital. ⋯ In the bivariate analysis, the variables associated with the cost of transplantation were the length of hospital stay, delayed graft function, death of the patient, graft loss, use of steroids, and death-censored graft loss. In the multivariate analysis, delayed graft function was the only statistically significant variable for the cost of transplantation. Since only delayed graft function had an impact on the cost of transplantation in this study, certain steps such as shortening of the cold ischemia time (better organization of organ transport), better education of family members for living donors, and higher percentage of patients on peritoneal dialysis should be taken to lower the percentage of delayed graft function.

A CROSS-SECTIONAL STUDY OF HEPATITIS B AND HEPATITIS C KNOWLEDGE AMONG DENTAL MEDICINE STUDENTS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ZAGREB.
Dental health care workers, particularly dental medicine students (DMS), are at an increased risk of hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. The aim of our study was to assess the level of knowledge on HBV and HCV, estimate needlestick injury (NSI) prevalence and reporting practice in DMS at the University of Zagreb, and analyze how enrolment in obligatory and supplemental courses affects knowledge and NSI reporting practice. The knowledge was assessed by our questionnaires based on the Centers for Disease Control general handouts. ⋯ In conclusion, DMS have low levels of knowledge on important occupational pathogens and poor NSI reporting practice. Moreover, formal education in the current form has failed to significantly improve student competence and theoretical knowledge translates poorly into more conscientious injury reporting practice. We should look for a better way to increase student awareness and level of knowledge on this topic.

Vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) is one of the most common anomalies of the urinary system in children. Contrast-enhanced voiding urosonography (ceVUS) is one of the best methods in VUR diagnosis. This study compared characteristics associated with VUR specific images and categorized patients according to a particular VUR grade. ⋯ In this study, the incidence of VUR in prenatally diagnosed hydronephrosis was 28.6%. It is necessary to develop an algorithm for the treatment of children after UTI in Croatia, which should include ceVUS. All children with possible VUR should be referred to a specialized center where it is possible to perform ceVUS.
