Development and validation of a disease-specific health-related quality of life measure, the LupusQol, for adults with systemic lupus erythematosus.
To develop and validate a disease-specific health-related quality of life (HRQOL) instrument for adults with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). ⋯ The LupusQoL is a validated SLE-specific HRQOL instrument with 34 items across 8 domains defined by patients as being important.

Comparative StudyComparison of the EuroQol and short form 6D in Singapore multiethnic Asian knee osteoarthritis patients scheduled for total knee replacement.
To compare the EuroQol (EQ-5D) and Short Form 6D (SF-6D) among multiethnic Asian patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA) scheduled for total knee replacement in Singapore. ⋯ Using different preference-based health-related quality of life instruments may yield different utility scores, which could have a great impact on QALY estimates. This highlights the importance of selecting appropriate instruments for economic evaluation. Additional research is needed to determine which instrument (the EQ-5D or the SF-6D) should be used in OA patients.

Comparative StudyRacial/ethnic differences in activities of daily living disability in older adults with arthritis: a longitudinal study.
To investigate racial/ethnic differences in disability onset among older Americans with arthritis. Factors amenable to clinical and public health intervention that may explain racial/ethnic differences in incident disability were examined. ⋯ Racial/ethnic differences in the development of disability among older adults with arthritis were largely attenuated by health and medical access factors. Lack of health insurance was particularly problematic. At the clinical level, treatment of comorbid conditions, functional limitations, and promotion of physical activity and weight maintenance should be a priority to prevent the development of disability, especially in minority populations.

Primary knee and hip arthroplasty among nonagenarians and centenarians in the United States.
The number of individuals ages >or=100 years in the US is expected to increase considerably in the future along with the need for arthroplasties. This report focuses on the poorly studied epidemiology and mortality outcomes of arthroplasty among these individuals. ⋯ In the US population, hip and knee arthroplasty are very rarely performed among centenarians. Our in-hospital mortality data suggest that arthroplasties should not be denied to centenarians solely because of short-term postoperative life expectancy estimates.

Association of arthritis with a gene complex encoding C-type lectin-like receptors.
To identify susceptibility genes in a rat model of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and to determine whether the corresponding human genes are associated with RA. ⋯ Rat APLEC is associated with susceptibility to polyarthritis, and human APLEC and DCIR may be associated with susceptibility to anti-CCP-negative RA.
