This study intended to delineate the mechanism and functional role of integrin α2 (ITGA2) in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cell immune escape. Bioinformatics analysis was utilized to analyze ITGA2 expression in NSCLC tissues, and correlations between ITGA2 expression and patient survival time, ITGA2 expression and programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1; CD274) expression, and ITGA2 expression and CD8+ T-cell infiltration. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction detected ITGA2 expression. ⋯ Clinical sample testing unveiled that ITGA2 was upregulated in NSCLC tissues. PD-L1 upregulation was seen in exosomes separated from patient blood, and correlation analysis showed a positive correlation of exosomal PD-L1 expression in blood with ITGA2 expression in tissues. This study displays a novel mechanism and role of ITGA2 in NSCLC immune escape, providing directions for the clinical therapy of NSCLC patients.

Erythropoietin (EPO) resistance is frequently reported in hemodialysis (HD) patients. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a common biochemical condition that comprises central obesity, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and hyperglycemia. The present study aimed to assess the relation between MetS and EPO resistance in HD patients. ⋯ Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified lower albumin levels (OR (95% CI): 0.072 (0.016-0.313), p < 0.001), higher ferritin levels (OR (95% CI): 1.05 (1.033-1.066), p< 0.001), higher hsCRP levels (OR (95% CI): 1.041 (1.007-1.077), p = 0.018), and MetS (OR (95% CI): 36.68 (2.893-465.05), p = 0.005) as predictors of EPO resistance in the studied patients. The present study identified MetS as a predictor of EPO resistance in HD patients. Other predictors include serum ferritin, hsCRP, and albumin levels.

Prediction of prognosis after radical resection of gastric cancer has not been well established. Therefore, we aimed to establish a prognostic model based on a new score system of patients with gastric cancer. A total of 1235 patients who underwent curative gastrectomy at our hospital from October 2015 to April 2017 were included in this study. ⋯ The new score model had a greater AUC (The area under the ROC curve) than other systems, and the C-index of the nomogram was highly reliable for evaluating the survival of patients with gastric cancer. Based on the tumor markers and other clinical indicators, we developed a precise model to predict the prognosis of patients with gastric cancer after radical surgery. This score system can be helpful to both surgeons and patients.

In the general population, abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is synonymous with vascular disease and associated with increased mortality. Vascular disease is common in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients on dialysis, but there is limited information on AAA in this population. To address this issue, we queried the United States Renal Data System for risk factors associated with a diagnosis of AAA as well as the impact of AAA on ESRD patient survival. ⋯ When compared to patients without AAA, AAA patients were older and more likely to be of white race and male gender, have a higher mean Charlson comorbidity index (CCI), have hypertension as the ESRD etiology, and use tobacco. Although a bivariate CPH model showed that AAA patients had an increased mortality risk compared to patients without the diagnosis, in the final CPH model, AAA patients had a decreased risk of mortality (aHR = 0.83, 95% CI 0.81-0.84) due to confounding with age. These results suggest that AAA is not associated with increased risk of death in ESRD patients after controlling for various demographic and clinical risk factors.

Cisplatin use is often limited by its ototoxic side effects, which can lead to irreversible hearing loss. Preventing cisplatin-induced ototoxicity is crucial to improve patient outcomes. Fluoxetine and fluvoxamine, both selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors antidepressants, inhibit the NLR pyrin domain-containing protein 3 inflammasome, a potential therapeutic target for preventing ototoxicity. ⋯ Fluoxetine or fluvoxamine use may be associated with a reduced risk of cisplatin-induced ototoxicity. Randomized clinical trials are needed to confirm these findings and establish the efficacy of the medications in ototoxicity prevention. Further research is also warranted to investigate the potential mechanisms underlying this protective effect.
