Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical TrialEffectiveness of montelukast in the treatment of cough variant asthma.
Antileukotriene agents have been shown to be beneficial in chronic asthma. Although patients with cough variant asthma have cough with minimal wheezing and dyspnea, airway hyperresponsiveness from chronic inflammation is believed to be the underlying mechanism. ⋯ The leukotriene receptor antagonist montelukast seems to be effective in the treatment of cough variant asthma. Larger studies are recommended to confirm this effect.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical TrialPatient knowledge of immunotherapy before and after an educational intervention: a comparison of 2 methods.
Immunotherapy is an invaluable therapy for allergic asthma, allergic rhinitis, and hymenoptera hypersensitivity. It is, however, not without risks. ⋯ Baseline immunotherapy knowledge of allergy vaccination patients was better than expected, and further educational interventions did not significantly improve this knowledge.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical TrialComparative activity of cetirizine and desloratadine on histamine-induced wheal-and-flare responses during 24 hours.
Cetirizine and desloratadine are antihistamines active in the treatment of symptoms associated with seasonal allergic rhinitis and chronic urticaria. ⋯ Cetirizine was associated with significantly greater suppression of skin reactivity to histamine compared with desloratadine during 24 hours after a single dose, with a consistent duration of action for cetirizine, as previously reported.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Comparative Study Clinical Trial Historical ArticleAddition of montelukast or salmeterol to fluticasone for protection against asthma attacks: a randomized, double-blind, multicenter study.
For patients whose asthma is uncontrolled with low-dose inhaled corticosteroids, addition of alternative therapy instead of increasing the steroid dose is recommended by current treatment guidelines. ⋯ Addition of montelukast or salmeterol to an inhaled corticosteroid similarly protected most patients from experiencing an asthma attack during a 1-year period, but, based on noninferiority limits, the study was inconclusive with regard to a difference between treatment groups.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical TrialImmune and histopathologic examination of flea bite-induced papular urticaria.
Papular urticaria caused by flea bite presents clinical symptoms of hypersensitive reaction accompanied by skin lesions. Diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to the disease often go unrewarded, partly because of our incomplete understanding of the underlying immunopathogenesis. ⋯ Our results suggest that the clinical manifestations of papular urticaria are mediated by a complex immune response involving more than one mechanism, with evidence forboth an IgE response and a cell-mediated type IV response.
