Impact of Herpes Zoster and Post-Herpetic Neuralgia on Health-Related Quality of Life in Japanese Adults Aged 60 Years or Older: Results from a Prospective, Observational Cohort Study.
Herpes zoster (HZ) and its most frequent complication, post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN), have been shown to considerably impact quality of life (QoL). This has not yet been demonstrated in Japan. ⋯ HZ impaired QoL in daily activity performance and emotional and physical functioning. The negative impact on QoL was more prevalent in patients with a longer PHN duration compared with HZ without PHN. ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT01873365.

Effect of N-Acetylcysteine on Mortality and Liver Transplantation Rate in Non-Acetaminophen-Induced Acute Liver Failure: A Multicenter Study.
Previous studies and systematic reviews have not provided conclusive evidence on the effect of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) in non-acetaminophen-induced acute liver failure (NAI-ALF). We aimed to study the value of intravenous NAC in reducing liver transplantation and mortality in NAI-ALF. ⋯ When administered on admission, intravenous NAC caused a reduction in NAI-ALF mortality and need for transplantation. NAC decreased encephalopathy, hospital stay, ICU admission, and failure of other organs.

Efficacy and Safety of Pregabalin for the Treatment of Neuropathic Pain in Patients Undergoing Hemodialysis.
Pregabalin is a gamma aminobutyric acid derivative administered for neuropathic pain. It binds to α2δ subunits of voltage-dependent calcium channels, and inhibits calcium inflow of synapses and the release of excitatory neurotransmitters. This study investigated the efficacy and safety of pregabalin in patients with peripheral neuropathic pain undergoing maintenance hemodialysis. ⋯ If adverse effects are carefully monitored and the administered dosage prudently determined, pregabalin can be an effective treatment for peripheral neuropathic pain in patients undergoing hemodialysis.

Sublingual Fentanyl Tablets for Relief of Breakthrough Pain in Cancer Patients and Association with Quality-of-Life Outcomes.
Breakthrough pain (BTP) is highly prevalent in patients with cancer and is strongly associated with adverse outcomes related to health status, mood, anxiety and depression. However, studies on the effect of BTP medication on quality of life (QOL) are lacking. The purpose of this study was to provide a qualitative evaluation of the effect of sublingual fentanyl tablets (SFT), a therapy specifically developed for BTP, on the QOL of cancer pain patients. ⋯ SFT represents an effective, well-tolerated treatment for cancer BTP. Results provide consistent evidence for the positive impact of SFT on health-related QOL and physical functioning as well as other co-morbidities of cancer BTP such as anxiety and depression.

Efficacy and safety of sublingual fentanyl tablets for the management of breakthrough pain in patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain with neuropathic component: multicenter prospective study.
Despite its prevalence and impact, breakthrough pain (BTP) in chronic non-cancer pain with neuropathic component, has not been well studied and is sometimes unrecognized and often undertreated. We evaluated the efficacy of sublingual fentanyl tablet (SLF) for the treatment of BTP in opioid-tolerant patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain with neuropathic component in terms of relief of pain intensity and assessed whether hypothetical pain relief impacts on quality of life (QoL). ⋯ SLF provides significant reductions in BTP intensity. The results of the BPI and EQ-5D assessments indicate that pain relief is associated with improvement of functioning and enhancement of QoL.
