Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialPsychological consequences of screening for abdominal aortic aneurysm and conservative treatment of small abdominal aortic aneurysms.
To describe the potential psychological consequences of screening for abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs). ⋯ The offer of screening causes transient psychological stress in subjects found not to have AAA. However, diagnosis of an AAA seems to impair QL permanently and progressively in conservatively treated cases. This impairment seems reversible by operation. Nevertheless, the impairment seems considerable, and must be considered in the management of AAA and in the final evaluation of screening for AAA.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Clinical TrialLength of hospital stay following elective abdominal aortic aneurysm repair. U.K. Small Aneurysm Trial Participants.
To investigate factors associated with a prolonged hospital stay after elective open surgical repair of abdominal aortic aneurysm. ⋯ Conditional logistic regression analysis identified only preoperative lung function (FEV1 and FVC) and physical functioning, three intrinsically linked factors, as predictors of length of hospital stay after elective repair of an abdominal aortic aneurysm.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study Clinical TrialRandomised controlled trial of percutaneous transluminal angioplasty for intermittent claudication.
To determine differences between PTA and conventional medical treatment in treadmill distance until onset of claudication, treadmill maximum walking distance, patient reported maximum walking distance, ankle brachial pressure index (ABPI), quality of life (Nottingham Health Profile, NHP) and Duplex measured extent of occlusive disease. ⋯ Only 10% of claudicants had discrete lesions suitable for PTA. Treatment of these patients with PTA produces a greater short-term improvement in walking and quality of life than medical treatment alone and is associated with less progression of disease.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Comparative Study Clinical TrialDesign issues of a randomised controlled clinical trial on spinal cord stimulation in critical limb ischaemia. ESES Study Group.
Review of the design of a clinical study to evaluate of the efficacy of epidural spinal cord electrical stimulation (ESES) as compared to best medical treatment in patients with nonreconstructible critical limb ischaemia. ⋯ Considering the high incidence of death and amputation, 18 months of follow-up seems adequate to detect a clinically relevant outcome improvement from ESES-treatment, if present. We hope to present the results of this study at the end of 1995.

Randomized Controlled Trial Clinical TrialA randomised, clinical study of the effect of low-dose dopamine on central and renal haemodynamics in infrarenal aortic surgery.
To determine whether dopamine prevents deterioration of central haemodynamics and renal function in aortoiliac surgery. ⋯ Peroperatively, dopamine counteracted depression of left ventricular function. The increased ERPF at the first postoperative clearance in the dopamine group indicates either improved peroperative haemodynamics or a synergistic effect between dopamine and epidural sympathetic blockade. Dopamine also improved diuresis and natriuresis.
