Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter Study Comparative StudyA decision aid regarding treatment options for patients with an asymptomatic abdominal aortic aneurysm: a randomised clinical trial.
Abdominal aortic aneurysm patients tend to be informed inconsistently and incompletely about their disorder and the treatment options open to them. The objective of this trial was to evaluate whether these patients are better informed and experience less decisional conflict regarding their treatment options after viewing a decision aid. ⋯ In addition to regular patient-surgeon communication, a decision aid helps to share treatment decisions with abdominal aortic aneurysm patients by increasing their knowledge about the disorder and available treatment options without raising anxiety levels; however, it does not reduce decisional conflict, nor does it improve satisfaction.

Randomized Controlled TrialCompression stockings after endovenous laser ablation of the great saphenous vein: a prospective randomized controlled trial.
To determine if the duration of wearing compression stockings after endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) of the great saphenous vein (GSV) has influence on pain and quality of life. ⋯ Prescribing compression stockings for longer than 2 days after endovenous GSV ablation (without simultaneous phlebectomies) leads to reduced pain and improved physical function during the first week after treatment.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyAn association between chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and abdominal aortic aneurysm beyond smoking: results from a case-control study.
It is currently unclear whether the parallels between abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are explained by common risk factors alone, such as cigarette smoking, or by a predetermined cause. Given the persistent controversy with regard to the association between AAA and COPD, we studied this association in depth. ⋯ This study confirms an association between AAA and COPD and shows that this association is independent from smoking. Findings also demonstrate that COPD is under-diagnosed in AAA patients.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyRisk stratification scores in elective open abdominal aortic aneurysm repair: are they suitable for preoperative decision making?
Risk indices help quantify the risk of cardiovascular events and death prior to making decisions about prophylactic AAA repair. This paper aims to study the predictive capabilities of 5 validated indices. ⋯ Whilst V(p)-POSSUM and E-PASS predicted outcome, the less complex RCRI and GAS performed poorly which questions the utility of decision making based on these surgical risk indices.

Randomized Controlled TrialCost and effectiveness of laser with phlebectomies compared with foam sclerotherapy in superficial venous insufficiency. Early results of a randomised controlled trial.
Quantify endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) with concurrent phlebectomies and ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy (UGFS) in cost and effectiveness at 3 weeks and 3 months. ⋯ UGFS is 3.15 times less expensive than EVLA (£230.24 vs £724.72) with comparable effectiveness but 56% (versus 6%) required additional foam (ISRCTN:03080206).
