Thromboembolic disease is the most frequent medical complication of arthroplasty. ⋯ Compared with LMWH, lower doses of oral factor Xa inhibitors can achieve a small absolute risk reduction in symptomatic deep venous thrombosis without increasing bleeding.

The optimal duration of thromboprophylaxis after major orthopedic surgery is unclear. ⋯ Prolonged prophylaxis decreases the risk for venous thromboembolism, PE, and DVT while increasing the risk for minor bleeding in patients undergoing total hip replacement.
