Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study
Pudendal nerve stimulation for bowel dysfunction in complete cauda equina syndrome.
Pudendal nerve stimulation (PNS) aims to maximize afferent or efferent stimulation from the sacral plexus. ⋯ PNS is an effective treatment in the short term for bowel dysfunction in some patients with complete CES.

Individualized deliberate practice on a virtual reality simulator improves technical performance of surgical novices in the operating room: a randomized controlled trial.
The purpose of this study was to investigate whether individualized deliberate practice on a virtual reality (VR) simulator results in improved technical performance in the operating room. ⋯ A curriculum of deliberate individualized practice on a VR simulator improves technical performance in the OR. This has implications to greatly improve the feasibility of implementing simulation-based curricula in residency training programs, rather then having them being limited to research protocols.

One-millimeter cancer-free margin is curative for colorectal liver metastases: a propensity score case-match approach.
To investigate the influence of clear surgical resection margin width on disease recurrence rate after intentionally curative resection of colorectal liver metastases. ⋯ One-mm cancer-free resection margin achieved in patients with colorectal liver metastases should now be considered the standard of care.

Pretreatment expression of 13 molecular markers as a predictor of tumor responses after neoadjuvant chemoradiation in rectal cancer.
This study evaluated the predictive value of a number of tissue biomarkers, including proliferating cell nuclear antigen, survivin, thymidine phosphorylase, thymidylate synthase, bax, p53, nuclear factor-kappa B, vascular endothelial growth factor, matrix metalloproteinase-2, matrix metalloproteinase-9, CD133, CD44, and cyclooxygenase-2 with regard to preoperative chemoradiation in rectal cancer. ⋯ Elevated CD44 mRNA levels in pretreatment biopsies might be predictive of poor tumor regression after preoperative chemoradiation in rectal cancer. Moreover, the proliferating cell nuclear antigen mRNA level might be predictive of nodal regression.

Robotic versus laparoscopic hepatectomy: a matched comparison.
To perform a matched comparison of surgical and postsurgical outcomes between our robotic and laparoscopic hepatic resection experience. ⋯ This is the largest series comparing robotic to laparoscopic liver resections. Robotic and laparoscopic liver resection display similar safety and feasibility for hepatectomies. Although a greater proportion of robotic cases were completed in a totally minimally invasive manner, there were no significant benefits over laparoscopic techniques in operative outcomes.
