To examine long-term survival and causes of death among working-age patients with acute pancreatitis (AP) compared with the normal population. ⋯ The long-term mortality among patients admitted to the hospital due to (mainly alcohol induced) AP was 4 times higher than that in the age- and sex-matched control population. The significant difference in the causes of death between patients with alcohol AP and controls could be explained by alcohol-related diseases. Occurrences of AP without an alcohol etiology had a minimal impact on survival.

The aim of this study was to determine long-term changes in pharmacological treatment of type 2 diabetes after primary Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) surgery, in patients with and without pharmacological treatment of diabetes preoperatively. ⋯ Gastric bypass surgery not only induces remission of pharmacological treatment of type 2 diabetes but also protects from new onset of pharmacological diabetes treatment. The effect seems to persist in most, but not all, patients over 7 years of follow-up.

We aimed to evaluate the use of miR-200b as a prenatal transplacental therapy in the nitrofen rat model of abnormal lung development and congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). ⋯ Our data indicate that miR-200b improves PH and decreases the incidence of CDH. Future studies will further exploit this newly discovered prenatal therapy for lung hypoplasia and CDH.
