BACKGROUND:: Breath VOCs have the potential to noninvasively diagnose cancer. ⋯ Exhaled breath samples were collected using 2-L double-layered Nalophan bags, and were analyzed using selected-ion-flow-tube mass-spectrometry. Gold-standard test for comparison was endoscopy for luminal inspection and computed tomography (CT) to confirm cancer recurrence. Three studies were conducted: RESULTS:: CONCLUSION:: This study suggests the association of a single breath biomarker with the primary presence and recurrence of CRCa. Further multicenter validation studies are required to validate these findings.

To examine risk factors for posttreatment recurrence in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) patients with initial presentation of lateral neck metastasis (N1b). ⋯ Posttreatment recurrence is predicted by the LN ratio in the lateral compartment and postoperative serum levels of thyroglobulin in patients with metastatic PTC in the lateral neck.

A detailed analysis of outcomes after migraine surgery suggests an anatomic etiology of pain, such as peripheral nerve compression, in select patients. ⋯ Migraine surgery remains controversial. Traditional conservative therapy targets the central theory of migraine propagation. This study again prospectively demonstrates the efficacy of surgical trigger site deactivation in migraine patients. Patients either failed to improve or improved after surgery, with few intermediate outcomes. The binary distribution of data lends further support to an anatomic etiology of pain, that is, peripheral nerve compression, in select patients.

The primary goal in intestinal failure (IF) is adaptation and enteral autonomy (EA). Our goals were to determine the proportion of patients treated for IF by an established intestinal rehabilitation program who achieved EA and to assess the predictors of EA. ⋯ Seventy percent of infants with IF achieved EA. Residual small and large bowel length were the most important predictors of EA and septic events had a negative impact.
