To examine the association of BMI with mortality and related outcomes after oncologic esophagectomy. ⋯ Both high BMI and low BMI were associated with mortality, major complications and multiple complications after esophagectomy for esophageal cancer. Patients with low BMI were more likely to die once a major complication occurred. The present results can assist with risk stratification in patients undergoing oncologic esophagectomy.

To compare positron emission tomography (PET)/magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to the standard of care imaging (SCI) for the diagnosis of peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) in primary abdominopelvic malignancies. ⋯ PET/MRI improves detection of PC compared with SCI which frequently changes management.

To assess the efficacy and safety of intentional watch and wait (W&W) and organ preservation surgery following neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy plus consolidation CAPEOX in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-defined low-risk rectal cancer. ⋯ Chemoradiotherapy plus consolidation CAPEOX for MRI-defined low-risk rectal cancer can lead to high rates of organ preservation through intentional W&W or local excision. The oncologic safety of this strategy should be further tested.

To examine whether laws limiting opioid prescribing have been associated with reductions in the incidence of persistent postoperative opioid use. ⋯ Laws limiting opioid prescriptions were not associated with subsequent reductions in persistent postoperative opioid use.

To describe 30-day outcomes including post-operative complications, readmissions, and quality of life score changes for older adults undergoing elective ventral hernia repair with retromuscular mesh placement and to compare rates of these outcomes for individuals undergoing robotic versus open approaches. ⋯ Robotic ventral hernia repair is an option for appropriately selected older patients undergoing retromuscular ventral hernia repair, demonstrating shorter hospital stays and equivalent rates of complications and readmissions in the post-operative period. However, more data is needed regarding QoL outcomes and long-term function, especially as it relates to recurrence rates, between the two approaches.
