Mental Health Burden After Injury: It's About More than Just Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.
Assess the prevalence of anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after injury and their association with long-term functional outcomes. ⋯ The mental health burden after injury is significant and not limited to PTSD. Distinguishing among MHD and identifying symptom-clusters that overlap among these diagnoses, may help stratify risk of poor outcomes, and provide opportunities for more focused screening and treatment interventions.

Patient-reported Outcomes at 6 to 12 Months Among Survivors of Firearm Injury in the United States.
Assess outcomes in survivors of firearm injuries after 6 to 12 months and compared them with a similarly injured trauma population. ⋯ This study highlights the need for targeted long-term follow-up care, physical rehabilitation, mental health screening, and interventions for survivors of firearm violence.

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic On Emergency Adult Surgical Patients and Surgical Services: An International Multi-Center Cohort Study and Department Survey.
The PREDICT study aimed to determine how the COVID-19 pandemic affected surgical services and surgical patients and to identify predictors of outcomes in this cohort. ⋯ The first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted surgical patients, both directly through co-morbid infection and indirectly as shown by increasing mortality in peak months, irrespective of COVID-19 status.Higher CFS scores and ASA grades strongly predict outcomes in surgical patients and are an important risk assessment tool during the pandemic.

The goal of this study was to examine a multi-institutional experience with adrenal metastases to describe survival outcomes and identify subpopulations who benefit from adrenal metastasectomy. ⋯ Durable survival is observed in patients undergoing adrenal metastasectomy and should be considered for subjects with isolated adrenal metastases.

Multicenter Randomized Phase 2 Trial Comparing Chemoradiotherapy and Docetaxel Plus 5-Fluorouracil and Cisplatin (DCF) Chemotherapy as Initial Induction Therapy for Subsequent Conversion Surgery in Patients with Clinical T4b Esophageal Cancer: Short-term Results.
We conducted a multicenter randomized prospective phase 2 trial of chemoradiotherapy (CRT) versus chemotherapy (CT) as initial induction therapy for conversion surgery (CS) in clinical T4b esophageal cancer. We compared treatment effects and adverse events (AEs). ⋯ Upfront CRT was superior to upfront CT in terms of pathological effects and AEs. The Japan Registry of Clinical Trials (s051180164).
