Elective Surgery Cancellations During the Time Between Scheduling and Operation.
Surgery cancellations cause harm to patients, extra work for preoperative staff, and financial loss for organizations. Day of surgery cancellations are a widely used indicator for operative effectiveness, but there is a lack of knowledge concerning the effects of cancellations during earlier stages of a patient's preoperative waiting period. The purpose of this study was to measure the reasons, frequencies, and timing of elective surgery cancellations after scheduling. ⋯ More attention should be focused on patients' suitability and organizational resources in earlier stages of preoperative period.

Preoperative Risk Assessment to Guide Prophylaxis and Reduce the Incidence of Postoperative Nausea and Vomiting.
This article describes the implementation of a postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) risk prediction and prophylaxis protocol. ⋯ The results of this project suggest that a risk-tailored approach to PONV prophylaxis using a risk assessment tool along with treatment recommendations is effective at reducing the incidence of PONV. The effectiveness of this approach is limited by the involvement of the anesthesia providers responsible for completing the assessments and administering PONV prophylaxis.

The Effect of a Parental Visitation Program on Emergence Delirium Among Postoperative Children in the PACU.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of parental presence on the incidence of emergence delirium (ED) of children in the postanesthesia care unit (PACU). ⋯ Parental visitation programs could be effective on the degree of ED in children in the PACU setting. This result may contribute to the establishment of PACU visitation program policy in South Korea.

To analyze cancellations of surgeries and identify evidence-based interventions to address this issue. ⋯ Cancellation of scheduled surgeries has a significant impact on patients' health, resources, cost, and quality of care. It is difficult to devise a solution without understanding the cause of cancellations.

To examine sedation scales and monitoring practices, specifically evaluating utilization of the Pasero Opioid Sedation Scale (POSS) in the clinical setting. ⋯ The POSS is an effective tool to assess sedation and increase confidence among nurses.
