Case ReportsAcute renal failure induced by disseminated intravascular coagulopathy in a patient with adenomyosis.
Disseminated intravascular coagulation is most frequently associated with obstetric catastrophes, metastatic malignancy, massive trauma and bacterial sepsis, but relatively rarely related to benign tumors. We report on disseminated intravascular coagulopathy in a patient with significant adenomyosis and menometrorrhagia. An extremely rare case, disseminated intravascular coagulopathy developed in this benign case and was successfully treated with a hysterectomy and blood product transfusions.

Case ReportsUse of FloSeal hemostatic matrix in a patient with severe postpartum hemorrhage.
FloSeal (hemostatic gelatin matrix with a human-derived thrombin component; Baxter Healthcare, Deerfield, IL, USA) hemostatic matrix is used as an adjunct to hemostasis when conventional procedures have proved ineffective. In the present case, FloSeal was used in combination with transfusions, NovoSeven (recombinant activated human factor VIIa; Novo Nordisk, Copenhagen, Denmark) and compression to achieve hemostasis in a patient with postpartum bleeding and hypofibrinogenemia due to primary acute fatty liver of pregnancy. The patient presented with signs of acute hepatic failure, modified renal failure and bleeding disorder at week 37 of pregnancy. ⋯ FloSeal was applied intrauterine and to the vaginal walls, and stable hemostasis was achieved after 2 h. At the one-month post-delivery visit, anatomic and physiological status had returned to normal, although the patient had low fibrinogen and prothrombin activity. This case demonstrates the safety and effectiveness of FloSeal in combination with conventional procedures to achieve hemostasis in postpartum bleeding in a patient with hypofibrinogenemia.

Survey on the trends in uterine cervical cancer screening in Japanese women: the efficacy of free coupons in the screening.
In Japan, cytological examination is performed for uterine cervical cancer screening, but the rate of participation in these programs is low. Between October 1, 2009 and March 31, 2010, free coupons for uterine cervical cancer screening were distributed to Japanese women. The Fukuoka Tuberculosis Prevention Center investigated the trends in uterine cervical cancer screening participation of Japanese women in the 6-month screening program. ⋯ The distribution of free coupons serves as an initial step towards promoting awareness of preventive measures against uterine cervical cancer.
