The association of metabolic syndrome with executive dysfunction independent of subclinical ischemic brain lesions in Japanese adults.
The aim of this study is to examine whether metabolic syndrome is directly associated with cognitive impairment independent of subclinical ischemic brain lesions. ⋯ Metabolic syndrome is associated with impairment of executive function independent of silent brain lesions in the Japanese population.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyTranscultural influences in dementia care: observations from a psychosocial intervention study.
Various models of intervention for caregivers of patients with dementia have been described. There has been little direct comparison of cultural differences between countries and the effect any differences may exert on the outcome of caregiver interventions. ⋯ This first multinational carer intervention study has emphasised the similarities between the three countries whilst highlighting crucial differences which may be important when planning cross-cultural studies in the future. The positive results achieved on caregiver depression were replicated across the three centres.

Randomized Controlled TrialSpine Surgery under general anesthesia may not increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease.
Volatile anesthetics cause Alzheimer's disease (AD)-like neuropathology in animals. We determined whether spine surgery under general anesthesia and anesthetic choice contributed to AD development. ⋯ These results suggest that increasing age is a risk factor for AD in patients after spine surgery. Anesthesia/surgery may not be independent factors for AD development.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyRivastigmine in the treatment of dementia associated with Parkinson's disease: effects on activities of daily living.
To investigate the effects of rivastigmine capsule 3-12 mg/day over 24 weeks on activities of daily living (ADLs) in patients with dementia associated with Parkinson's disease (PDD). ⋯ In patients with PDD, treatment with rivastigmine may show beneficial effects on overall ADLs, as well as modest, statistically significant improvements in basic ADLs and high-level function ADLs.

Comparative StudyComparison of neuropsychological and FDG-PET findings between early- versus late-onset mild cognitive impairment: A five-year longitudinal study.
Our purpose was to investigate differences in neuropsychological characteristics and glucose metabolism between early-onset mild cognitive impairment (EOMCI) and late onset MCI (LOMCI) patients and to determine if the baseline differences are predictive of conversion to dementia. ⋯ Our study suggests that EOMCI patients may differ from LOMCI in the patterns of cognitive deficits and glucose hypometabolism. In addition, baseline neuropsychological and FDG-PET findings suggest that MCI patients with poor memory or frontal dysfunction are at greater risk of conversion to dementia.
