Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyQuality of life and the effect of memantine in dementia with lewy bodies and Parkinson's disease dementia.
To investigate quality of life (QOL) and the effect of memantine treatment in patients with Lewy body dementias. ⋯ This study shows that memantine improves QOL in Lewy body dementias. We also demonstrate important QOL patterns which can be used in clinical practice.

Early post-stroke cognition in stroke rehabilitation patients predicts functional outcome at 13 months.
To identify prognostic factors associated with functional outcome at 13 months in a sample of stroke rehabilitation patients. Specifically, we hypothesized that cognitive functioning early after stroke would predict long-term functional outcome independently of other factors. ⋯ Early post-stroke cognitive functioning as measured by the RBANS is a significant and independent predictor of long-term functional post-stroke outcome.

ReviewA systematic literature review of cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers in delirium.
Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis has great potential to advance understanding of delirium pathophysiology. ⋯ No clear conclusions emerged, but the current literature suggests multiple areas for further investigation with more detailed studies.

Delirium is an important predictor of incident dementia among elderly hip fracture patients.
Delirium is believed to constitute a risk factor for dementia, but previous research has failed to satisfactorily take account of the patients' preexisting level of cognitive functioning. ⋯ In hip fracture patients free from prefracture dementia, delirium constitutes the main predictor of dementia 6 months later, adjusted for prefracture cognitive decline measured by the IQCODE-SF.

Minimal atrophy of the entorhinal cortex and hippocampus: progression of cognitive impairment.
In Alzheimer's disease, neurodegenerative atrophy progresses from the entorhinal cortex (ERC) to the hippocampus (HP), limbic system and neocortex. The significance of very mild atrophy of the ERC and HP on MRI scans among elderly subjects is unknown. ⋯ Minimal atrophy of the ERC results in greater impairment than minimal atrophy of the HP, and the combination is additive when measured by cognitive and functional tests. Rates of progression to greater impairment were higher among ERC(ma) subjects.
