Randomized Controlled TrialDementia caregivers' coping with pre-death grief: effects of a CBT-based intervention.
Pre-death grief plays a significant role in dementia caregiving, and has adverse impacts on caregivers. It was the purpose of the present study to examine whether a cognitive-behavioral intervention including a grief intervention module could increase caregivers' coping with pre-death grief and whether these effects could be maintained as of a six-month follow-up assessment. ⋯ Results indicate that a cognitive-behavioral intervention including grief-specific strategies can successfully foster caregivers' coping with loss and reduce burden of pre-death grief.

Randomized Controlled TrialEffect on anxiety and depression of a multifactorial risk factor intervention program after stroke and TIA: a randomized controlled trial.
Depression and anxiety related to stroke are caused by vascular lesions and psychological reactions. Treatment of vascular and modifiable behavioral risk factors reduces the risk of stroke and may also reduce the risk of emotional changes after stroke. We aimed to investigate whether a multifactorial risk factor intervention program in patients with first-ever stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA) can influence post-stroke anxiety and depressive symptoms in patients one year post-stroke. ⋯ A structured, multidisciplinary, multifactorial risk factor program including vascular risk factor management may be associated with reduced HADS scores and a lower prevalence of depressive symptoms one year after stroke.

Randomized Controlled TrialThe association between mild cognitive impairment and doing housework.
The ability to perform instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) is thought to be relatively intact for people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Doing housework as part of IADL is an important skill needed for older people to live independently and successfully. A limited number of studies explore the association between MCI and doing housework. The aim of this study was to assess the association between MCI and doing housework among old people. ⋯ MCI is associated with doing less housework. The deterioration in the ability to do housework is a potentially important indicator of evolving cognitive impairment in some old people.

Randomized Controlled TrialCognitive-behavioural group therapy improves a psychophysiological marker of stress in caregivers of patients with Alzheimer's disease.
Family caregivers of patients with dementia frequently experience psychological stress, depression and disturbed psychophysiological activity, with increased levels of diurnal cortisol secretion. ⋯ Psychoeducation for caregivers may contribute to a reduction of neuropsychiatric symptoms of AD patients while CBT additionally attenuates psychophysiological responses to stressful situations in caregivers, by reducing diurnal cortisol levels. This may lead to a positive impact in the general health of the caregiver, eventually resulting in better care of the AD patient.

Randomized Controlled TrialPositive psychology interventions in people aged 50-79 years: long-term effects of placebo-controlled online interventions on well-being and depression.
Various positive psychology interventions have been experimentally tested, but only few studies addressed the effects of such activities in participants aged 50 and above. ⋯ Positive psychology interventions yield similar results for people aged 50 and above as for younger people. The dissemination of such interventions via the Internet offers a valuable opportunity for older age groups as well.
