Observational StudyLower incidence of late tamponade after cardiac surgery by extended chest tube drainage.
To ascertain whether extended chest tube drainage decreases the occurrence of late tamponade after cardiac surgery. ⋯ Longer mediastinal chest tube drainage after cardiac surgery is associated with a significantly lower incidence of late cardiac tamponade.

Twenty-year results of surgical pulmonary thromboembolectomy in acute pulmonary embolism.
Acute massive pulmonary embolism is often a life-threatening condition and should be treated immediately. The aim of this study was to investigate risk factors and clinical outcomes of patients undergoing emergency pulmonary embolectomy for acute massive pulmonary embolism. ⋯ Pulmonary embolectomy can be performed in high-risk patients with massive pulmonary embolism with acceptable clinical outcome and good long-term survival.

A national needs assessment study to determine procedures for simulation-based training in cardiology in Denmark.
New training methods such as simulation have been introduced in cardiology as in other specialties; however, the development of effective simulation-based training programs is challenging. They are often unstructured and based on convenience or coincidence. The objective of this study was to perform a nationwide general needs assessment to identify and prioritize technical procedures that should be included in a simulation-based curriculum for cardiology residency in Denmark. ⋯ The general needs assessment following the Delphi process identified and prioritized 13 technical procedures in cardiology that should be integrated in a simulation-based curriculum. The final list provides educators a guide when developing simulation-based training programmes for cardiology residents.

Comparative StudyST2 in heart failure with preserved and reduced ejection fraction.
Soluble suppression of tumorigenecity 2 (sST2) is prognostic in acute and chronic heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) but less studied in HF with preserved EF (HFpEF). We evaluated sST2 concentrations, correlations with biomarkers and echocardiographic measures of diastolic and systolic function, and associations with outcomes in HFpEF and HFrEF. ⋯ In patients with HFpEF compared to HFrEF, crude levels of sST2 were lower but potentially more strongly associated with outcomes. The lower levels of sST2 in HFpEF than in HFrEF may reflect lower degrees of fibrosis, but the potentially stronger association with outcomes may reflect a greater prognostic importance of progressive fibrosis and as such a greater potential for intervention. In conclusion; this study adds to the evidence of sST2 as prognostic marker in both HFpEF and HFrEF.

Treatment of sleep apnea in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation: design and rationale of a randomized controlled trial.
Atrial fibrillation is associated with increased mortality as well as morbidity. There is strong evidence for an association between atrial fibrillation and sleep apnea. It is not known whether treatment of sleep apnea with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) will reduce the burden of atrial fibrillation. ⋯ This study is the first randomized controlled trial that will provide data on the effects of CPAP therapy in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation and sleep apnea. The results are expected to improve our understanding of the interaction between paroxysmal atrial fibrillation and sleep apnea. ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier. NCT02727192.
