Randomized Controlled TrialEffects of short-term xylitol chewing gum on pro-inflammatory cytokines and Streptococcus mutans: a randomized, placebo-controlled trial.
Dental caries is an infectious disease with predominantly of cariogenic bacteria such as Streptococcus mutans (S mutans). Xylitol is considered as one of the effective agents that can limit this dental infection. In this randomised, placebo-controlled trial, we aimed to evaluate the potential reflection of short-term xylitol consumption on pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-8) and S mutans counts by ELISA and qPCR (Quantitative real-time PCR), respectively. ⋯ Intriguingly, even short-term consumption of xylitol might play a favourable role in maintaining the oral health status, possibly as a result of decreasing the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and the counts of S mutans. Nonetheless, this investigation warrants further endorsement.

Randomized Controlled TrialEfficacy and safety of tadalafil vs tamsulosin in lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) as a result of benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH)-open label randomised controlled study.
Several newer medications have emerged for the management of lower urinary tract symptoms secondary to benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). The efficacy/safety of PDE-5 inhibitors (Tadalafil 5 mg) in BPH-lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) has been sparingly assessed in the published English literature as compared with their established role in erectile dysfunction. We aim to assess the efficacy/safety of tadalafil vs tamsulosin in symptomatic patients of BPH in a tertiary care teaching institution. ⋯ In summary, therefore, we may conclude that that once daily monotherapy with tadalafil 5 mg or tamsulosin 0.4 mg was equally efficacious in the management of moderate to severely bothersome LUTS in majority of patients as a result of BPH. The role of Tadalafil monotherapy in BPH patients with predominant storage LUTS merits further evaluation with larger trials.

Randomized Controlled TrialThe Effect of Consumer Medicine Information in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Randomized Controlled Interventional Study.
In patients with diabetes, better health communication is associated with better health outcomes including medication adherence and glycaemic control. The conventional patient information leaflet does not consider the cultural and behavioral perspectives of diverse patient populations. Consumer medicine information (CMI) is a written information about the prescription drugs developed by organisations or individuals other than a drug manufacturer that is intended for distribution to consumers at the time of medication dispensing. ⋯ CMI for anti-diabetic medications when added to usual care has the potential to improve medication adherence and glycaemic control among patients with type 2 diabetes. Therefore, providing better health communication and CMI to patients with diabetes is recommended.

Randomized Controlled TrialA randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, evaluating the garlic supplement effects on some serum biomarkers of oxidative stress, and quality of life in women with rheumatoid arthritis.
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), is a prevalent immune-inflammatory disease, which is associated with disabling pain. Oxidative stress might play a role in RA pathogenesis and outcomes. According to the antioxidant properties of garlic, the current study was performed to evaluate the garlic supplement effects on some serum levels of oxidative stress biomarkers, and quality of life in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. ⋯ The findings suggest that garlic supplementation for 8 weeks resulted in significant improvements in oxidative stress, HAQ in women with RA.

Randomized Controlled TrialMen's Sexual Health Questionnaire score changes vs spontaneous sexual adverse event reporting in men treated with dutasteride/tamsulosin combination therapy for lower urinary tract symptoms secondary to benign prostatic hyperplasia: A post hoc analysis of a prospective, randomised, placebo-controlled study.
To assess the impact of baseline characteristics on Men's Sexual Health Questionnaire (MSHQ) total scores and to evaluate the clinical relevance of MSHQ changes and their association with spontaneously reported sexual adverse events (SexAEs) in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia. ⋯ Findings support the clinical utility of the MSHQ tool in assessing the impact of DUT-TAM on sexual function by linking numerical changes in MSHQ scores to spontaneously reported SexAEs for the first time. The threshold effect for incidence of SexAEs warrants further investigation to determine its clinical relevance.
