The effect of the EXOPULSE Mollii Suit on pain and fibromyalgia-related symptoms-A randomized sham-controlled crossover trial.
Fibromyalgia pain and related symptoms are poorly managed by approved pharmacological and alternative interventions. This trial aimed to evaluate the effects of the EXOPULSE Mollii Suit-a multisite transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation device-on fibromyalgia pain, fatigue, affective symptoms, disease impact, and quality of life. ⋯ Patients with fibromyalgia suffer from pain as well as fatigue, sleep impairment, emotional disturbances, and altered quality of life. Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation might help manage those symptoms, but the available systems are limited by the fact that they could be applied at best over two sites. This randomized controlled study is the first to apply a multi-site transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation device, the EXOPULSE Mollii Suit, with significant effects on fibromyalgia pain and related symptoms.

Despite the use of Patient-Drawn Pain Drawings (PDPDs) in clinical settings, their validity as indicators of psychological distress remains debated. We aimed to assess the association between PDPD areas and physical health and psychological variables. ⋯ This large-scale study demonstrates that extensive pain areas in pain drawings drawn by LBP patients do not signify psychological distress. Our findings reveal that these pain representations are more closely linked to increased pain intensity, pain duration, and disability rather than being independently associated with psychological factors. Clinicians are encouraged to focus on the association of extensive pain areas with physical symptoms rather than psychological distress during clinical assessments.

Mindfulness-based stress reduction for chronic pain: Enhancing psychological well-being without altering attentional biases towards pain faces.
This study examines the effects of a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program on psychological measures and attentional patterns to pain stimuli, using eye-tracking methods, in individuals with chronic pain. ⋯ This study pioneers the use of eye-tracking to examine how MBSR influences attention in chronic back pain. While the program improved psychological well-being, it did not generally alter attentional patterns, except for an increased ability to maintain attention across stimuli. We discuss whether this attentional change could be associated with the increased acceptance observed in the MBSR program.

Adolescent predictors of substance use in young adulthood among individuals with childhood-onset chronic pain: A follow-up study.
Adolescent chronic pain is a substantial public health problem, and pain symptoms often persist into adulthood. Young adults with chronic pain are at elevated risk for more frequent tobacco, alcohol and cannabis use, and cross-sectional research highlights the importance of psychosocial vulnerability factors. Limited research has examined how adolescent predictors, including mental health symptoms, pain, sleep and family functioning, impact later, young adult substance use. ⋯ This prospective observational study of young adults with childhood-onset chronic pain identified adolescent depression and sleep quality as vulnerability factors associated with substance use. Given the increasing risk for substance use during adolescence and young adulthood, these findings highlight the potential importance of early intervention to reduce substance use among young adults with childhood-onset chronic pain.

Group dynamics and therapy outcome of multimodal pain therapies: A prospective observational trial.
For the treatment of chronic pain, interdisciplinary treatment programs are recommended. Despite continuous adaptation and optimization of this cost- and time-intensive and comprehensive form of therapy, it is not successful in some patients. As personality disorders have an important influence on social interaction and behaviour, the aim of our study was to identify the possible impact of patients with personality disorders on group dynamics and to analyse the influence of group dynamics on individual therapy outcomes. ⋯ The study emphasizes that clinicians may include patients with personality disorders in multimodal pain treatment programs and groups, provided that the maintenance of a close therapeutic bond with the patient and within the interdisciplinary team is given.
